SJB:

I see Mitch McConnell has had another 'frozen' episode while answering reporters questions.

I actually prefer him like that.

going by the tv footage I saw it looked like a mini TIA (transient ischemic attack) or mini stroke.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

And the question that froze him was whether he was standing in 2026!!

What the hell is he doing still there (apart from nothing, that is)?

The NY Times - Proud Boys Lieutenant Sentenced to 17 Years in Jan. 6 Sedition Case

31 August 2023

Two leaders of the Proud Boys were sentenced to lengthy prison terms on Thursday for their roles in the assault on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, with a top lieutenant in the far-right group, Joseph Biggs, given 17 years, and another key figure in the attack, Zachary Rehl, getting 15 years.

Mr. Biggs’s sentence following his conviction in the spring on charges of seditious conspiracy was one of the stiffest penalties issued so far in more than 1,100 criminal cases stemming from the Capitol attack and among only a handful to have been legally labeled an act of terrorism.

If it's actually a TIA like some are saying, this is wildly inappropriate. Those things are no joke.

Whose joking. He makes his own joke by still being there and not resigning when he is clearly not fit for office.

EDIT: lets call it an "absence seizure" because he clearly was not there for 30 or more seconds.

Well, clearly you are. It's not a joke. If it's the first time it's happened, or among the first, it's not exactly a surprise to just call it something to watch without major concern - it may not recur. That's a decision made by medical professionals with access to medical history, not GZ posters.

And let's not call it that, since you're clearly trying to minimise something that might actually be quite serious. Do you know what an ischemic attack is?

McConnel has always been a really nasty piece of work. As an example he blocked Obamas nomination for the Supreme Court for months which eventually led to Trumps nominations and the overturning of Roe vs Wade resulting in millions of women in the US no longer having access to abortion advice.

If he dropped dead tomorrow a lot of people would raise a glass.

How would you react if, for example, Putin or Assad had the same symptoms.

Medical professionals in Washington that provide services to Congress and the White House, now that is a joke. They can be just as bad as lobbyists in Washington. Anything to stay in power to stroke their inflated egos. Money, medicial certificate of good health, half truths, twisted English language, compromise, compromise, compromise. It doesn't matter so long as they stay in power to forward to their own twisted ideals what THEY think the American people want not what they need.

The Guardian: Too old to govern? The age problem neither US party wants to talk about

The question was simple: what are your thoughts about running for re-election in 2026? “Oh,” said Mitch McConnell with a half-chuckle, a mumble and then: silence. The most powerful Republican in the US Senate stared into space and said nothing for more than 30 seconds.

It was the second time in little more than a month that 81-year-old McConnell had frozen while speaking to reporters. But there were few voices in the Democratic party calling on him to step down.

The question of age is one that both party establishments in America have cause to avoid.

Democrat Joe Biden, 80, is the oldest president in American history. Republican Donald Trump, 77, is the second oldest and current frontrunner for the party nomination in 2024. The Senate, average age 64, has one of the oldest memberships of any parliamentary body in the world. It is small wonder that dealing with America’s drift into gerontocracy is not top of its agenda.

American leadership today makes me think of the Soviet Politburo in Brezhnev's time - a creaking gerontocracy on the way out.

The first election sign vandalism I saw in my suburb and adjoining suburbs was Freedom Party billboards with Tamaki and some other person's face cut out leaving round empty circles and daylight. You can just about guarantee that's done by some unhappy crew of anti-vaxxers or something similar.

Coincidentally I see Luxon has 100% ruled out working with Tamaki now.
