Trump is the best reason America can move to a simple popular majority vote for electing the president. It's arguably the way the system was originally designed anyway.

They have local government, state legislature, congress and senate so it's not as if there will be a lack of state issues influence on the system.

My money is that it is just his traits and personality. Its easy to imagine business deals where it came down to, sell it to me or you will never do business here again once I tell my other rich mates. His brief hiatus came post election when he praised his worthy opponents. But, he has always been a bully, can do whatever he wants, he can't temper himself. I would imagine that he is not used to being criticised, for the same reason above. That's what I think anyway

That is a good point. I am still inclined to believe there is also substance abuse, he probably thinks he can control it.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I am sure this guy is a substance abuser. His tweets are just ... just...

My money is on early stage dementia. His father had dementia, which gives Trump a statistical likelihood of also developing it somewhere between 50-70%.

That coupled with his narcissism, and his privileged and entitled life would explain a lot.

Sorry - but that's not correct in most cases.

You'd need evidence that Trump's father had a form of dementia for which there is heritability, but AFAIK there's no evidence of that and statistically unlikely (1% ?).

Some of the known heritable forms are "early onset".  Pays to note that "Alzheimer's" diagnosis used to be confined to early-onset disease, in the elderly it was just "dementia" or "senile dementia" etc.  If Trump was 50 - not 70 - then maybe...

Mentioned because it's no good for anybody to falsely believe that they will or will not get senile dementia based on what happened to their parents.  For one group, you'll put them through unfounded worry and stress, for the other, you'll encourage over-confidence that they'll not suffer dementia, thus they may ignore lifestyle behaviours which may have detrimental impact on their future life - be that dementia, CVD, cancers, or the whole gamut of diseases afflicting the elderly.

Trumps a bit overweight clearly, but nothing specific suggesting he's a candidate for dementia - except his loathsome and often bizarre behaviour -= which as MikeB4 points out could have other explanation.

Fair - I think I misinterpreted what Wikipedia was saying. Fred Trump was well known to have Alzheimer's, and that has a 49-79% hereditary link according to the Wikipedia page - but rereading, I think that means cause not probability.

True. His word salads and poor vocabulary seem to be far less present if you watch interviews with him in years gone by. But maybe that's just old age cognitive decline (but is a symptom of alzheimer's).

In any case, he's behaving like a child.

Seeing as we're well into conjecture anyway - what drug?

My guess would be cocaine - not solely from behaviour (awake and tweeting in the small hours, his "sniffing" etc), but of course cocaine was the drug of choice when he was in his prime.  He would have been surrounded by it.

And it was widely accepted and encouraged in the circles of the rich and famous that he moved in. It would have been hard for him to avoid. It is an interesting idea.

Wikipedia

Fred Trump suffered from Alzheimer's disease for six years.[7] He fell ill with pneumonia in June 1999 and was admitted to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, where he died at age 93 a few weeks later.

So it would have been from age 87 or so... certainly not early-onset (defined as first diagnosed before age 65). Familial (i.e. genetically-linked) early-onset Alzheimers accounts for 50% of early-onset Alzheimers, which in turn is about 13% of all Alzheimers. There doesn't seem to be any genetic association with late-onset Alzheimers like Trump's father had.

OTOH, studies have found that about a quarter of people of 65 eventually get Alzheimers.

According to this page

The prevalence of dementia among individuals aged 71 and older was 13.9%, comprising about 3.4 million individuals in the USA in 2002. The corresponding values for AD were 9.7% and 2.4 million individuals. Dementia prevalence increased with age, from 5.0% of those aged 71-79 years to 37.4% of those aged 90 and older.

So, just based on his age, there's a 5% or so chance that Trump is demented (not necessarily by Alzheimers).

True - but that's also based on date of diagnosis.

My father developed Alzheimers, only professionally diagnosed when he was in his 80s.  Retrospectively however, it was very clear that there had been shall we say "changes" for years preceding diagnosis.

Not that it really mattered anyway, you deal with symptoms, behaviours, there's no cure, no accurate prognosis on expected rate of deterioration.  It is a very cruel disease.

If Trump's heading down that path, I doubt that anybody in the WH or his personal physician etc is going to have the guts to tell him about their suspicions - put yourself in their shoes.
Worse, I guess they'd be reassuring his already over-confident ego that he's not got a problem - it's  "us" - anybody who'd dare to ask if he's losing his marbles.

It's a Catch 22 situation.  He has to be "nuts" to behave the way he is, he can't be "nuts" because he's POTUS behaving much the same way as he did a year ago.

Absolutely, but he's vehemently denied using cocaine or other (illegal) narcotics, and there's some anecdotal support from people he associated with that he could be telling the truth about that, at least over the past decade or so.

There's something wrong in his head though.  Even if his nasty tweets aren't actually "his" but Steve Bannon or other alt:right fascist-leaning %rseholes in the WH encouraging him to tweet such stuff as part of their plan to drive a wedge against liberals and the press.  FFS - he's POTUS, but behaves like a stupid spoiled child or undignified pig.

If you're "upset" by Trump's tweets, then you're a "snowflake".  Plenty of people believe that, apparently.
