Now I think Putin and his special forces hypnotized Trump for 2 hours and absolutely converted him into the manchurian candidate.

Crazy stuff. Trump said that he accepted Putins denial of election tampering, then the US Govt says thats not the case.

I pity the poor Sys Admin that has to go to the Oval Office and take Trumps cellphone, computer access, swipe card etc off him as the most effective part of the impenetrable cyber security

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

This has to be one of the most astoundingly stupid things that Trump has ever said.

This is like the FBI asking the Mafia to form an Anti-Crime Unit with them.  undecided

Asking the ex who hates you to mind the bank account

Asking the cat to babysit the goldfish

Mind numbing. I cant think of any possible reason that might have an extremely small positive on this

Yes- it's so incredibly stupid it beggars belief that it came from a POTUS.

OTOH Trump has some ability to deliver a speech drafted for him.  He's slow and a little hesitant, but that (talking slowly) is a good thing. Whether he actually comprehends what he's saying is another matter.

His speech writers know what they're doing - his Poland address to the world was full of dog-whistle messages designed to alarm the gullible and alienate anybody who doesn't share the alt:right views of certain individuals in his administration. I'm somewhat skeptical about the way "western values" are put on a pedestal.  Which ones?

It was only a decade ago that the thought of USA slowly declining worried me. If I still thought like that then Trump fast forwarding that decline would terrify me.

But I don't, I've come to realise that New Zealand's future lies with it's re-alignment with countries such as China and Russia. We are perfectly situated to escape the USA death roll, while appearing to support them.

How long before America becomes as irrelevant as the UK on the world stage? Let's not spend a single calorie pondering this question and get to work hitching our wagons to our new world leaders.

He is making America great again!!!

To my small brain its beginning to look like the Trump clan are deliberately trying to weaken the US and cosy up to Russia. Either that he is totally off his rocker. Whats more amazing is the Republicans allowing it to happen.

Unfortunately you need to separate economic alignment from political alignment. Economically there's no problem being more closely aligned with China, for example: they buy a lot of our stuff, and we in turn buy a lot of theirs. However, the Chinese government is still an authoritarian government that we wouldn't want to emulate. The Russian government is an authoritarian government of crooks, and we wouldn't want to emulate them either.

I don't know who we would want to align ourselves to politically in the latter 21st Century. Germany, maybe? They seem set to take over the position from the US, but they've got no particular reason to want to take New Zealand under their wing.

I agree but not with Russia. Although, maybe?   But China, Europe, Canada, any western country that isnt a a dick or run by one. All this trade tariff stuff seems to have never surfaced, I hope it does, to give a real and genuine reason for Govts to openly back away and make new friends

China does though act in a good way, they are spending a lot of effort to reduce corruption, get away from the cheap Chinese goods moniker. They are a different culture but they aren't warmongers, and in today's violent world, that's a plus

I wouldn't say that China are not war-mongers; just they are less war-like than the US

They have no problem grabbing land by force, such as building artificial islands in the South China Sea, and their expansive territorial claims.
