He mentioned the Coast Guard work and asked an Air Force guy to say some words about his people. Then he said a radar evading plane is invisible. Plus the water purifying device that he never heard of before - and thought the person distributing it in Puerto Rico was hawking her own product.

What a doofus.

[re-posted here, because it's still true]

A bit of poetic licence has been taken, unnecessarily, in the cartoon with the last part of Mencken's quote.

"The larger the mob, the harder the test. In small areas, before small electorates, a first-rate man occasionally fights his way through, carrying even the mob with him by force of his personality. But when the field is nationwide, and the fight must be waged chiefly at second and third hand, and the force of personality cannot so readily make itself felt, then all the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre—the man who can most easily adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum.

The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

dclegg: I'm wondering what will come first: Trump's impeachment, or him running out of people to serve at his pleasure. Looks like Tillerson may be the next one to go, according to the Washington Post.

Neither. Trump's not gonna get impeached and there'll be plenty of people willing to step into the fray and make a name for themselves.

Not sure I'd be willing to bet a fiver on that. Robert Mueller's probe is starting to get to the heart of things. If you're interested, Seth Abramson dissects the latest news on this in significant detail on his Twitter feed.

Could be joke of the century - Hitler and Stalin got nominated, but that was so last century.

I don't think he'll be impeached any time soon.

He's launched crony capitalism V2.0, which for the time being the markets clearly love - corporates/industry unbridled from regulation which was put in place to protect the consumer, the environment (IOW "us" on our planet) from entities that don't care a damn.  They also don't care about government debt - so long as government doesn't take action to reduce debt.  There's no sign of that, with plans to reduce company tax rates, then US debt growth will accelerate.  They'll defend that (increase in debt) by whataboutism - "look what happened under Obama" without accepting the circumstances behind that (GFC).

Many of those doing well will continue to put their mouths where their money is, and support Trumpism.

And now he asks for Senate to investigate media outlets.

Donald J. Trump is frustrated. He’s the president of the United States, and yet there are limits to how he can use his power. He can’t just snap his fingers and end Obamacare; his travel ban got gummed up in litigation; he can’t flick a switch and “open up” libel laws; the regime in North Korea doesn’t appear to respect him too much.

And then there’s the issue of the Beltway media, which refuses to enable a man extraordinarily unfit for his responsibilities. NBC News, for example, reported on Wednesday that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had referred to President Trump as a “moron” after a July meeting at the Pentagon, not to mention that the top diplomat “was on the verge of resigning.” The story carried four bylines and extensive sourcing. CNN reported that Trump knew before Wednesday about the “moron” moment.

That's a bit like hypothesising if he returns - should they give Jesus the Nobel Peace Prize.

Oh hell no.

I wonder when Trump will award himself the Medal of Honour, the Victoria Cross and Knight himself. He probably has daily tantrums because he can't walk across the Potomac

Remember they gave it to that Aung San Suu Kyi, and that turned out well.

Yes - although I don't 100% trust the news from there.

There are quite a few retrospectively dubious laureates in the list.

Actually the report on the Nobel nominations was in error - Trump and Putin are front-runner nominees for the 'Piece' prize. Candidates must prove that they already dominate, and are loathed by, the citizens of at least one large country or continent, and that they are passionate in their desire to extend their control over more 'pieces' of the globe, especially territories whose citizens have considerable nuisance value for the winning candidate.

Typical examples of these are newly independent States of the former Soviet Union, and the notoriously pesky New Zealand, which country has caused numerous problems for the US because of it's refusal to disclose its hokey pokey ice-cream recipe, or allow visits from US nuclear powered warships, most of which are only slightly smaller than Manhattan Island and need large harbors, like Auckland, for berth space.

Such territories will, of course, need local governance, and it's rumored that both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have been conducting secret talks with New Zealand's current Deputy Prime Minister-elect, Winston Peters.

I have a friend who is in country at the moment, in the relevant region, and he confirmed to me that there is a big situation.

Democracy in Burma is a bit of a veneer, no matter what the UN would like us to believe.
