So, who actually voted to allow Winston to choose the government then?

I thought voters decided that...

The voters did decide that NZF will have representation in the House that another party through choice will ask to be a coalition party. This is not a covert process that was fully known prior election.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Every election there is talk of the kingmaker, this year it was VERY much a possibility. When YOU voted, YOU knew of that, and YOU knew that National might have to work with Peters.

So the answer to your query is YOU

All the voters voted for which party they wanted to be part of the coalition that forms the government. There's just no guarantee that your party will be part of that coalition.

No secrets were harmed during this election!

I see a bit of a sore loser thing going on here. There is no party with a mandate, so the next step is to obtain a mandate by way of working with others.. Nats Winny, Labour Winny it doesnt really matter. Along as we have a majority Govt. Being a compromise Govt it will be milder, and more widespread, thats not a bad thing

I believe Nats and Peters would work together well, especially under English. However, I think Peters will go left to maximise the publicity he will get as it will be a circus. It will be fun to watch. Good luck Jacinda...I forsee many many grey hairs and lots of talks with Aunty helen.

I am sure a circus would not be fun to watch. NZ First does not want chaos and the country wants stability they know that.

Given the current count that seems unlikely. If done it would be a tempting situation for a waka-jumper or two to change sides. That one also requires Peters to work with the Green party and vice-versa.

Stranger things have happened so who knows.

National with Green support and Peters on the sidelines? That would be a strange one and also very unlikely I would think.

And that's why I voted NZF with my party vote. I know and am happy to accept the choice NZF make when deciding which party they'll support to form the government.

I watched Winston's 'press conference' this morning. The New Zealand media were so stupid, repeatedly asking him who he's going to support. and what his 'bottom lines' were. How many times do they have to hear that he's not going to tell them, as they're not the ones he'll be negotiating with.

You see, I would rather WE made that choice, not Winston Peters (or any other party).

I don't see the value of handing the decision to MP's rather than voters.

You are just whining for a return to FPP. Simple majority wins regardless of how much more the losing votes add up to. Or maybe you also want to restrict it to two choices only?

I feel it would work smoother in Labour. Him and JA have no history, there are at least 3 in Labour he gets along very well with. National would be a circus as BE will be continually reminding WP and us that he is the boss, let alone the at least 2 others he cannot get along with. It will be a power play

MikeB4:

You are right we should have the choice and we do have the choice and we have made the choice.

Say that again? Who exactly is this "we" you are referring to, the 7% of voters that voted NZFirst?

People who voted National/Labour/Greens certainly did not make this choice or have this choice. Perhaps you can highlight what an outright majority of New Zealanders could have done to prevent it?

The MMP system as it is is skewed, Because ultimately Winston will probably be deputy PM, nobody besides 7% of the voters put him there. Its even more skewed when you think that he can possibly be PM, and most likely will be acting PM on the odd occasion if English is not available (again the vast majority of Kiwis will disapprove). We all knew this 3 years ago when we voted ion the referendum to retain or drop mmp, unfortunately many New Zealanders did not really understand the system. Hopefully now many people will realize its power, and in the next MMP referendum (if we ever have another), we get rid of it and scrap this stupid system.

All that aside, I think a NZ First / National government can work pretty well. I agree with Winstons stance on immigration and the Maori seats, toughening up on hard core crimes, deporting non NZ citizen criminals etc. Not sure though if he will get his way. But one thing is sure, he has the ability to call a lot of shots. I recon a Winston/National government will untimely push government further to the right, and people who have complained about the National government of the past will soon be longing for the good days under just national/Maori/Act.

The next few weeks should be interesting.

Just because the vote went a certain way does not make the vote wrong or the choices wrong, I guess tuntrums and breath holding while demanding the system should be changed was inevitable.
