I also did NOT want any minor party to be the tail the wagged the dog.

TBF, greater influence from minor parties is the whole point of MMP. You think Winston is dysfunctional? He's a paragon of reasonable compromise compared to the Republicans vs. Democrats or Tories vs. Labour. Even in Australia which is largely 2-party in the House of Representatives you have some "minor" party influences with a large proportion of independent MPs in the H of R and an all-but-in-name Party List vote in the Senate.

States with two-party politics truly are two sides of the same coin. They have no incentive to be anything but.

In my view the well of political talent in Aotearoa is very shallow so by the time you filter through to the minor parties the skill base is quite tragic. Once beyond Labour, National and Green the well is all but dry.  Even in the top three its not that flash. Its sad that one is not voting for the very best but voting for the least tragic.

Edit: I wonder sometimes that it's not a case of voter apathy here but a case of voter bewilderment with what's on offer. In the last Local Government elections I didn't want to vote for any of the mayoral candidates, in my view they were all rubbish.

No, I personally think it's voter disrespect/anger. Imagine being someone talented who genuinely wants to make NZ a better place - regardless of where you might fall on the political spectrum on any given issue, a third of voters won't give a ****, a third will disapprove and a third will actively rage against you. There will be a handful who are grateful, but they will be more than outweighed by the handful that go on to make - and sometimes follow through with - threats against you and your family.

The best you can hope for is to get a watered-down version of a few of the least controversial things you wanted to do through parliament before the other crowd repeal them. And you get paid bugger-all for it, compared to what you could get in the private sector.

Why would we be surprised that most politicians are either idiots or power-hungry sociopaths? They're the only people who would bother.

The vote was a challenge. The last few elections the choice for me was relatively easy this year, hmmm we really need a 'none of the above' option.

Same for me. There's one party I'm usually most aligned with (although I did split last time and gave the party vote to another party for the first time), and the Vote Compass survey had me pretty much on top of their dot in the chart this time. But there are enough of their policies this time that I don't like so I'm still undecided about whether I just abstain as not sure I want to put my name to it.

I don't regard Brian and Hannah Tamaki as religious nuts, they are pseudo religious nuts and grifters. They pretend to be religious in order to fleece their followers and the taxpayers of Aotearoa.

Of course Australia has prospered by having built up its retirement investment fund decades before we even started.

Uhh, Australia has no such fund. There's a retirement fund for public service pensions, but that's it. The Future Fund is a general investment vehicle for just "sovereign wealth".

No way, the cost to everyone in NZ would be far too high.

I have voted and I guess I will vote again next year or maybe before christmas.

"Vote early, vote often", as they say. 😀

Oh dear

But I will pay to see Chris, Nicola, Dave, and Winston "negotiating" post Oct 14.

Nicola needs to

  1. Be quiet
  2. Answer questions
  3. Leave Diversion to the Courts not the Debates

I'm assuming they mean private superannuation accounts.
