It'll be for real - but selected individuals of course.
My wife and did a long road trip years ago in North America, from LA to Quebec City to Key West and back to LA. Once out of California, when asked "hey I love your accent - are you English?" for the millionth time, I gave up saying I was from NZ - it got too hard explaining that nope - we didn't just drive up, and nope it's not really cold up there at this time of year etc.  We just said we were Australian instead (parly true) - and even then some of the questions asked were unbelievable. Most were of course very friendly nice folks - but NZ just doesn't feature - even if they did know roughly where it is, most knew nothing at all about it - and not a hell of a lot more about Australia.

 

OTOH I guess we live a fairly average/normal NZ life, tend to associate / meet / work with immigrants, tourists and other visitors from all over the world on a daily basis - so apart from basic school education - on average we probably get exposed to and learn from foreigners from a wider range of countries than someone from smallsville in Iowa or Alabama.

The kid at the end was brilliant, but he certainly wasn't representative - the others were.

 

My experience, admittedly from many years ago, is that Americans in general are incredibly ignorant. Not stupid, just ignorant. Professionals can be very knowledgeable about their area of specialty, but know almost nothing about anything else. Ignorance about other countries and the rest of the world is particularly bad. Most Americans just don't care and are not interested. They may express polite curiosity if they encounter somebody from another country, but that's about it. There are different reasons for this. Poor public schooling is one. insularity is another. Media like Fox news don't help and the country's large size and big domestic market have also helped keep it isolated in the past. Of course there is much more.

Had that too. NZ is a few miles off Australia's coast. Its near England.

You'd think the USA, Australia or Mexico would be a "gimme."

I think the continent Africa is popular because it frequently appears on T-shirts and posters during black history month, usually with the word "Africa" without anything else.

........ this short video on BBC News underlines what sort of people support Trump.  The lady in the middle of the video's thumbnail is particularly full of hate, but they are all three pretty nasty people.

 

I know it is the "collective hive" way of thinking to call Trump supporters names, to put them down, denigrate and thus create the impression of a lower class person just because they have a different opinion to yours and mine. They voted Trump for a reason, a reason that many in this thread either cannot comprehend, do not want to comprehend, or worse still, maybe just do not care.

 

Trumps growing power is driven by social media, in part because nobody wants to hear themselves being told off by self perceived "superior intellects" because they have made a bad "purchase" decision. Yep, a vote is the same as a product purchase. And we all know that people do not like to have their faces rubbed into the wrong decision. 

 

Trump is well on his way to his second term and the only way to stop this is to rethink the delivery of the Leftie Liberal message.

There's also another side to Trump support.  He's got a lot of backing from an assortment of "educated" people acting solely out of self-interest.  Tax cuts, reduction of regulation (environment, consumer protection, prudential regulation of markets etc).  It's actually an arguably valid method of selecting who to vote for, with any parties there will be some policies you agree with, some you don't - so cut through the crap, select one single most important issue and vote on that.  If that's amassing money for yourself - then you'd vote Trump. Amassing as much money for yourself as quickly as possible is the American dream almost everybody aspires to.

 

Those people are influential, own much of the media, and have worked hard and used that influence to convince the dumb and poor - using an assortment of tactics - to vote directly against their own interests for decades.

It is about how fascism takes hold. You change the story, create a fear of some group of people and start a "war" on this people. 

 

Hitler did this. He told people that Jews took their jobs. Jews took their profits. Jews had their own agenda. 

 

The Nazi party wasn't the majority. Hitler was just really good at convincing the President that a coalition was needed because he had a minority but without him there would be no consensus. So he was made Chancellor.

 

After this Jews were not allowed to be full citizens any more. They couldn't hold jobs, company positions. They couldn't marry non-Jews. But that wasn't all. They also imprisoned whomever disagreed with the party line. Intellectuals, professors - those who you'd today call "liberals". Gays, foreigners were targeted. Books were burnt. 

 

The lies were constantly repeated on radio. The lies were constantly hammered. 

 

The Nazi party then took full power. All that was possible because the politicians on the right wanted only one thing: stick to power. Like the Republican party is doing right now. Instead of fighting for their country they're fighting for their pockets, for the pockets of their donors, for power alliances. All the while the people, being lied to, believe Trump is fighting for social justice. 

 

Hitler fought the threat of communism and the Jews. Trump fights the threat of liberalism and latinos. Trump is already preventing immigrant serving in the armed forces from obtaining citizenship. He's already moving to strip immigrants from their granted citizenships. He already goes around shouting immigrants take their jobs.

 

Americans who fought the Nazi German would be appalled to learn their grandsons are just not better than those monsters.

Liberalism is what gave us human rights, free speech, decent wages, public health, decent working hours. I am very interested to know why you are so against "liberals".

 

Also, American left (as represented by the Democratic Party) is closer to centre than left in New Zealand or Europe. Compared to China and Russia the American Left is pretty much Republican. I am also interested to know why you use the term "leftie liberals" with such alacrity, as if the conservative right is the only option - which we clearly see in America is not working (as in public health being dismantled, social rights being tramped on, etc).

On Friday he told a story to gathered journalists that they all knew and which showed how great and smart he is.

 

And which wasn't true.

 

"I was opening Turnberry the day before Brexit and all they wanted to talk about was Brexit and I said I think Brexit would happen and it did happen," he said. 

 

He'd told that story to The Sun newspaper and they printed it, without apparently checking it, but then everyone else did their job for them and discovered Trump cut the ribbon at his golf course on the day after the Brexit vote.

 

Chalk it up as another Trump porky.

I think that many people are making a mistake believing that "Trump's not like Hitler - Hitler did x, y, and z - Trump's not doing that".  A better way to look at it is perhaps to ask "what would Hitler have done if he was in Trump's position?" - the answer is probably "pretty much what Trump is doing".
