What appalls me so much about all  this is that people are letting it happen. With Hitler there was at least the excuse that many did not realise where they were headed. I urge you to take a step back and think about that label, why you'd object to it in the first place (it's pretty mild after all!), and whether you'd be more inclined or less inclined to listen to the views of someone suggesting that you may be a "leftie liberal".  I'm 100% sure it'd be less inclined - hence it's quite reasonable to assume that calling those Trumpists "deplorables" or whatever might incline them to go elsewhere for opinion and information on the topic, and automatically reject what you'd say forever.  That was a huge mistake by Clinton - and it should never be repeated.

As far as social media goes.  Zuckerberg and Facebook is a serious problem.  Sure if you're reasonably concerned and/or understand WTF is going on, you can do more to secure your information on FB and how it's used than you could a couple of years ago. Zuckerberg puts on a poker face and sincerely promised to do something to "fix" the issues, knowing that as an "opt-out" process, the target demographic that he's monetised won't care enough or won't understand how they're used.  At the other end, people who are aware and do opt out are far more likely to be immune to "fake news" anyway - they'll spot it and reject it for what it is instantly. Zuckerberg will not do the right thing willingly, not now, not ever.

I object to it because it is an implied sneer. I don't mind being called liberal. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I like it better than the alternatives. I don't really mind being called 'left', though it lacks precision. I don't like being called 'a lefty'. It is demeaning because it trivialises something I take seriously. It is like calling a woman a chick. It is a veiled insult.

I don't think it is smart to insult someone you are trying to have a meaningful debate with, and that works in both directions, but I also don't believe it is honest to pander to those you are trying to persuade. There are some who think this is a legitimate tactic, as in it is acceptable to pretend to be a little bit racist in order to get someone to listen to your argument against racism. That is like selling your soul to the devil. I think Clinton's timing and choice of words was unfortunate. I do not think she was wrong.

Having Fox News in your home is like having a snake in your bed. It is a pure propaganda channel dedicated to pushing a particular (and particularly nasty) point of view. It is not conservative. It is neo-fascist. It makes no attempt to be fair or even honest. It lies to serves its ends. Comparing this to a real news channel like CNN (yes, 'progressive' by American standards but it doesn't intentionally lie) doesn't mean a thing. It is like comparing Goebbels to Walter Cronkite.

QFT. People are calling others "liberals" as a pejorative - similar to "antifa" being used as a sneer. Well, let me tell you what, folks: "antifa" makes sense when the option is a fascist, authoritarian, racist, bigot regime supported by like-minded people.

Under Trump, or inspired by him, there is a steady ongoing process of chipping away at rights and freedoms that have been built up over generations. The Antifa bill is just the latest example of that. I agree that Trump has the cerebral capacity of a Yorkshire pudding but dark creatures are attracted by his lack of restraint and are gathering around him. This is where the danger lies. Democracy is not being overthrown. It is dying from a thousand cuts.

I don't believe he's a stupid as you think - and in any case his strings are being pulled by an administration and party with some very clear objectives.  Part of his inconsistency is due to being pulled back at times from outright open fascism by more moderate (but still hard right wing) "libertarian" elements in the GOP, but much of his base share Trump's views for creating a patriarchal authoritarian white new world order led by the USA. The moderates are losing.

He's on his way to meet with Putin now.  I expect he'll be trading favours, Trump's objective is possibly to get consent to obliterate Iran.

Anyway... Getting back on topic — That Donald Trump, I hate him 

[EDIT] Watching TV1 news tonight, I was struck again by how Trump claims to accept Putin's denial of interfering with US elections, over an apparent mass of evidence from the FBI and CIA that Russia was guilty, and that Putin had to have been in on it.  Is this because accepting that Russia helped him get elected would take away from his narcissist belief that it was all down to him, or have Russia got something on him.  Actually, there's no reason why both can't be true.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Putin got together with his mates after the Trump meeting. However, I think I heard the laughter from here.

I am really disturbed by the antagonistic approach to the western countries versus his cosying up to Russia. And to rubbish his own intelligence service in a public setting just defies belief. What good could possibly come out of that except to Russian and the real "foe".
