MikeB4: Did years of private business prepare Trump for leading a country?

Thats silly Mike. Trump is an anomaly. Gone soon too! :-)

No one is qualified to he PM. As we dont expect 20 degrees in all the ministries. We expect leadership, and passion to govern. We dont want militant business people, nor militant unionists.

MikeB4: Trump, expertise now there is an oxymoron.

Exactly. I'm Trump, I've got a deal, sign it or your business is history.  Forget Sky as a monopoly, Trump has it in spades, by way of money/aggression/ego

MikeB4: Trump, expertise now there is an oxymoron.

The guy is painfully unqualified to be POTUS, I don't think many would disagree. If he stopped talking midway through sentences he wouldn't across as half the buffoon he always seems to sound, but I think it's disingenuous to discount the businesses he has built and the money he has made.

I was thinking that at least as a result of his presidency America would be better off for having learned from the experience, but they didn't learn from 8 years of Bush, so maybe there is no hope.

He was already rich, he screwed people, its that simple. Business is so easy of you can screw your competitors. Its like Monopoly and I have most of the money.

Labour promised 100,000 houses in 10 years. That's 27 a day, every single day for 10 years. They still haven't started the first one, now they need almost 30 a day. If they lived in the real world, they would know the math doesn't add up. I suspect they are going to be planning how this works for at least the next 12 months, before a hammer is picked up.

Don't worry, they've already started walking back that flagship policy.

Labour has previously indicated that KiwiBuild will ramp up to 16,000 homes within their first term before building over 10,000 a year in order to reach 100,000 in a decade.  "In the first half of next year we'll have a number of sites where the first KiwiBuild homes will be built," Twyford said.  "I would hope we would be turning the key in the front door of KiwiBuild homes some time in the middle of next year, but that will be a real stretch."

They only need to deliver 16,000 homes between mid next (this) year and the end of their term.

That's only 20 a day.  Every single day.  And they can then quietly bury the policy at the 2020 election.

IIRC that post was day one. So, if we plan to do stuff, with no planning, on day one, thats a worry. Forget about planning, business partners, stock, infrastructure. TBH I was really surprised by that post.

Just to note: NZ business confidence drops on Labour policy concerns

It is entirely coincidental that this story was just published :-)

I saw that today and you decided not to enlighten us, I will fill in the gaps. When labour is elected, confidence drops. When National is elected, confidence increases.

But you omitted that fact that the reality is that business activity changes very very little. Life goes on. Labour doesnt announce 40% wage increases and 20% company tax increases. Life goes on. Little changes except sentiment which is not business activity.

I don't think having business experience automatically confers wisdom. It may or may not give competence at being in business, but I see no reason why there should be any expectation that it makes one any good at politics. Politicians are tasked with seeing the big picture, not just what favours business interests. Maybe they are good at that, maybe they are not, but I reject the presumption that they are somehow inherently better if they come from the right wing of politics.

The government has extensive resources at its disposal. Ministers have advisers. They have entire departments tasked with this. They do not lack for business world expertise. Not having had a long career in business does not mean one cannot make sensible decisions about business interests. I think this is a red herring. If Ministers don't listen to their advisers, that is another matter. But it just means they are bad at their job. I do not believe that lack of business experience disqualifies one from holding a position of government leadership.

Its not so much that they are lacking business sense, but more commercial sense. There seems to be a lack of weighing up pro's and cons with their decisions and to hell with the consequences. There was definitely some social spending needed in some areas (national agreed with this during the campaign). but they need to think things through a little more.

You mean student loan and rent, and heating and insulation and rent?

I'm not sure I grasp the point that you're trying to make?  (Are you implying that I am suggesting that Labour shouldn't plan to meet its targets?)

If it helps to provide context for my post.  I was trying to convey that:

a) Labour set a target, as a headline policy, to build 100,000 homes.  (an average of 10k per year)

b) Labour starts making a plan for this, and decides that the target will be 16k in the first 3 years  (14k short of the required run rate)  ...but will make that up by building at a faster rate later on.

c) Labour estimate that they will (at best) open the door to the first of the new houses mid 2018, leaving only 27months to build the remaining 15,999 houses.

d) This means that Labour will still need to deliver 20 homes per day for the second half of their first term, and I believe that the chances of that happening are almost nil.

Sentiment plays its part. The article suggests business activity changes little. It's always hard to know how much it would have grown had National remained in governement.

In a slightly different context sentiment actually plays a huge part in the stock market.

Our biggest construction company spent weeks "preparing" this house and then got *1* up in a day. (There are caveats as this house wasn't "livable" at that point).

I have also been told by multiple reputable sources that we have neither the manpower, qualified people, nor capacity to produce 20 additional houses in NZ without significant increase to immigration and even then, it would be more than 5 years before it was able to be put into motion.

I am told that the 5 largest construction companies are booked solid with work for at least 3 more years and so they couldn't possibly do this work.

Another thought, 20,000 identical houses, created for low-income people, sounds like a recipe for crime-ridden dirty slums to be created.

Sounds like a Trump type promise to me.

It's also worth noting that the cost of this place was 33% higher that the upper limit set by Labour to qualify as an "affordable first-home in Auckland" (600k)

...of course, one could argue that a 600k place could be built 33% faster than this one :-)

Is $600k actually affordable for most families?

Actually most of our PM's have been party leaders for a period prior that gives them good leadership skills. JA has had nothing and it shows.
