Of course without populating the House and senate with similarly honest people of integrity and good will, nothing much will change for the US.

Zero chance of that happening.

I read a good joke about it on Reddit yesterday:

Hillary Clinton is elected to the presidency. On her first night in the Whitehouse, she has a dream. In her dream, she is visited by the ghost of George Washington.

'What can I do to best serve America?' she asks him.

'Never tell a lie,' he replies.

'Oh, I don't think I can do that,' she says.

On her second night, she dreams again, and is visited by the ghost of Thomas Jefferson.

'What can I do to best serve America?' she asks him.

'Listen to the people,' he replies.

'Oh, I don't think I can do that,' she says.

On her third night, she is visited by the ghost of Abraham Lincoln.

'What can I do to best serve America?' she asks him.

'Go see a play.'

I don't think there's much doubt that US domestic policy heavily influences NZ. You mention the Lange government, Douglas' policies (and later under National, most significantly Richardson's) didn't come out of thin air. They could have been written by Reagan and Volcker, then Greenspan.  Arguably, NZ was cornered and had little choice but to change (ie from the Muldoon policies), but the direction of that change was consistent with what happened in the US.

I think US politics had bugger all to do with what Roger Douglas (the failed pig farmer) or what Rottweiler Richardson came up with. New Zealand's financial situation was rather parlous and who ever was loaning us money would have been pulling the strings.

There's no doubt some of the privatisation decisions at that time reflected what had happened in the US but if you bother to look around similar things happened in many parts of the world where governments got out of a lot of public service businesses. Most of their policy reflected "popular" western economic thinking of the period.

In fact the US government is still in many of those businesses so it could be said we haven't followed the US.

Fred99:

NZ may have "bucked the system" with anti-nuclear policies of the Lange Govt, but I'd argue that those policies made very little difference to the lives of NZers, some perhaps felt a bit morally righteous.

Perhaps you should talk to some of our sheep farmers to see if they were affected.

Due to Lange's pompous grandstanding on New Zealands nuclear policy thousands of lambs were slaughtered and buried because the farmers had no market for them, yet the Aussie farmers were making good money from their lambs. Why? All because of how David Lange handled the anti nuclear issue.

The US privately told the New Zealand government they would abide by New Zealand's "No Nukes" policy but they would not publicly say so. This deal was a compromise from both sides. The US would back down and not send any nuclear ships to New Zealand and the New Zealand government would not ban US ships.

That wasn't good enough for David Lange. New Zealand lamb and probably other products were no longer welcome in the US for a time because of our ban on US ships.

I don't remember that. Are you sure you are not confusing the time France bombed and sank the Rainbow Warrior in Auckland harbour and then blocked some NZ exports until Lange/NZ agreed to give the convicted agents back to France?

Pretty certain it was David Lange's insistence that the US publicly state they were not sending nuclear ships that caused the problem.

That one is news to me. Lange/Douglas' removal of the massive subsidies on lamb did cause a huge reduction in the sheep population. I'd be interested in any evidence you could show of the US causing further issues.

Was the "SMP" (supplementary minimum price) scheme.  It kind of inevitably resulted in some involuntary exaggeration of sheep numbers, in a "country mile" kind of way - so I'm told.  So you count 845 sheep, well "that's about 1,000".  Probably the worst thing the US did with NZ sheep exports was to get into a bit of a scuffle with Iran - or was it the other way around?  Anyway, Iran was a major export market which disappeared.

Of course all the smart sheep farmers borrowed millions and converted to dairy.  Oh wait...

The US doesn't want our lamb or butter - then, now, or in the future.

Yes, and I doubt the TPP will really change that much. Just because the tariffs will be somewhat reduced over a period of 15 years doesn't mean all the Americans are going to start camping out in the supermarkets waiting for the NZ lamb chops to arrive. They are the modern gold standard of nationalism. If it didn't come from an American farm, they won't want it.

Here's a good example of the gains we can expect from tariff barriers being lowered by the US because of the TPP (appealing to the US MEAT people in ads).
