As part of a Thanksgiving comment, he finished off saying

"This country is so much stronger now than it was when I took office that you wouldn't believe it."

That's correct, finally a fact for a change. You are correct Donald, we wouldn't believe it.

Why is Trump selling himself short?

I'm sure he couldn't imagine a better soldier, fire fighter, business man, climate expert, medical reformer, or male model more worthy for accolades.

Heck, maybe the cleaning staff should install windshield wipers and washers on his bedroom mirrors, to deal with the constant protein stains.

Khashoggi is one of millions killed in the line of his occupation. Dozens more are executed every week in the Gulf area for perceived crimes of a far less nature.

Turkey isnt innocent by any means in its crimes against its people.

Are we really entitled to believe we can change the mindset of these countries whose deliver penalties in the name of their religion or whatever?

I dont believe any President would stop trade with Saudi over this crime, or would enact harsh sanctions against them as America needs Saudi, infact we all do.

A better option may have been for Trump to STFU, and perhaps push for a regime change by getting the CP to stand aside for another family member.

Obama wouldnt have changed much here, but rather he would have changed the way the message was delivered. Trump is right, that if the push became to great it would make Saudi closer to Russia and China.

It is very complex and it is easy to be righteous, but then we would all be paying for it. The answer is long term rather than short term gut reactions.

No. We don't. There are already viable alternatives to oil and gas for enough applications that we could handle the residual with somewhat less human-rights-abusing sources while we work on ways to deal with those too. There is no better excuse for weaning ourselves off oil than "I don't want to".

An obvious example: Khashoggi's columns and other activities were clearly upsetting the prince enough to warrant having him murdered, so an all-out effort should be mounted to find and support others like him to do the same thing, only times 100. Even despots are sensitive, sometimes hypersensitive, to bad press. This has been demonstrated over and over again.

I would gladly pay something, even a lot, for the privilege of being righteous about this. Why should scum like that be allowed to get away scott-free? If no-one ever does anything, nothing changes.

I agree with you. We do indeed need principles. But who says our principles are better than theirs? People with our principles are far outweighed by principles we dont agree with...eg China, Gulf etcetc

I too was/am aghast at what the Gulf did to Khashoggi, and I am equally aghast at Trumps reaction.
