I can't see how this thread was hijacked by one side or the other - it takes two to tango. I would assert however that the ad-hominems above are mostly made by left leaners against right leaners.

You're new to Geekzone, so I doubt you'll understand what I'm getting at.

Perhaps you like this type of 'discussion', but I think it's better-suited for the comments section of Stuff or posts on Whale Oil or similar uncompromising sites.

Well to me that's just another off topic ad-hom.

There's a trend here among some 'old' posters to try and suppress the expression of those who they don't agree with.

As to the thread being hijacked, it would be helpful to consider who started this thread and what the topic was.

Have to agree,

As I am also pretty new to geekzone I guess Jonathans comment was directed towards me too. I did start the thread, and IMO I don't believe it has gone off topic. The only ones that have hijacked this thread are the arrogant ones from the far left. Unless I hijacked it?

What "arrogant ones from the far left".

Thats quite a claim.  I see a few comments from people who appear to be "green" voters - but that's not "far left".  I see quite a few people with moderate pragmatic opinion who seem to be expressing a view that your apparent obsession with what a politician did more than two decades ago is a bit hysterical - like a dog with a bone.

Not sure about wiggum but I'm on record here saying I couldn't care less what MT did decades ago. What I did express a problem with is here attitude to it *now* as a potential minister - specifically that she thinks it was OK to do what she did and by extension OK for someone to do it now.

As an aside... I don't think NZ has extreme left and right to any degree, in mainstream politics. Greens are as left as it gets and ACT are as right as it gets. Neither are extreme IMHO.

Its not you Mike. We disagree, but I dont think you have ever resorted to name calling.

The far left brigade know who they are. Many of their comments borderline with communism. Dare I name a few, @Fred99, @rikkitic, @tdgeek

Mods please lock this thread. I too have had enough.

No - there are much much more "left" than the Greens.  Not particularly popular or attracting more than occasional attention by the media.

The far right gets much more coverage IMO.

ROFL.

What a moronic assertion about me and my views - about which you know little to nothing.

You describing poor people. Big difference to poor people, and people struggling to "survive". The above is far from "struggling to survive".

Oh I see! It's only OK to break the law to survive. As soon as you're safe, you shouldn't do anything illegal to improve your situation. In that situation, you should be brave (steely-eyed is optional), and accept your life of poverty, without a car, Sky TV, a cellphone, or takeaways. And of course this will apply to your children and their children too. And as far as possible you'll do this *with* a sweaty brow, since bludging off the wealthy is unfair. And be grateful to those kindly taxpayers that you're living in a substandard hovel rather than on the street. Presumably when you or your child get sick, or some other disaster strikes to put you back into survival mode, it will be OK to steal a loaf of bread again. But be mindful of the taxpayer and only steal $1 Pams, not the good Vogels stuff. Nothing wrong with a bit of forelock-tugging, either!

And the rules as to how much money you get and how much gets taken off you will be made by someone who cares more about his Mercedes and holiday home (well, technically not *his* Mercedes or holiday home, since legally they're owned by a tax-avoiding trust) and shares and overseas trips and luxuries than about anyone else.
