I guess this is acceptable in this day and age? I wonder if Metiria and the Greens would condone this?

"A man was caught allegedly stealing a trampoline in Christchurch to sell for scrap metal to feed his children."
A man selling a trampoline for scrap to feed his family. Well he must be the dumbest mofo to walk this planet, Cause thats some low grade thin walled tube steel. If they still had 5C pieces he would probably just qualify for one of those.

When I first read this I thought: "I bet that would have to be boiled for quite a while to tenderise it"

A decent sob story can get you off a lot of things in this country, or even a stupid story.

Senior Sergeant Stephan McDaniel said when questioned by police the man said he was "grabbing it [the trampoline] for scrap metal to feed his kids".

Cops are likely to selectively quote whatever the defendant happened to say in order to paint the worst picture of them in court.  Some like to humiliate crims.

Not saying that this guy wasn't a moron for doing what he did, nor that he didn't say what was quoted, but faced with arrest people are likely to say all kind of dumb things.

My guess is that he probably stole the thing to sell intact - to feed some substance abuse habit.  That wouldn't have made the news though.

So he is a moron, but its perfectly fine for Metiria and the Greens?

Its apparently fine to steal from taxpayers to put food on the table. Its one of the greens newest policies that will probably happen if they elected. :-D

Metiria Turei must have known she was taking a risk when she confessed to benefit fraud at the Green Party conference last weekend. She appears to have underestimated just how great that risk was.

Journalists are likely to selectively quote police/politicians/geekzone in order to create click bait.

Yes they are, but never underestimate the willingness of police to embellish whatever a defendant might have said - in an attempt to poison judge (and/or jury) against an accused person. That's how adversarial systems work - one side describes the devil incarnate, the other a saintly victim.  The truth - somewhere in between - doesn't make for good click-baity news stories.

Hey, guess what? Whistleblowers were forced out their jobs early. Must be the fault of Metiria Turei and the Greens.

Here's a headline: Big winter storm expected to cause more flooding. I bet Metiria Turei and the Greens are behind it.

This one says weeds cost farmers billions of dollar a year. Is there no limit to the depths Metiria Turei and those vile Greens will stoop to?

Probably you missed the news... Turei made a speech where she said it was basically OK to commit welfare fraud to feed your baby - and she committed this fraud herself in her earlier years.

And this guy has stolen a trampoline to feed his baby, so one could argue that Turei has endorsed this type of activity.
