GV27: My guess is he'll just say he's been surprised by the reaction but understands where they are coming from and given that he's not particularly attached to it, it's not something he feels he absolutely needs in his office.

Unfortunately the next news was a double down with Muller stating he's taking it to his new leader office. All we can really say at this point is er.. um.. well.. ahem..

Yeah well - the "centre right" can't afford to alienate local magas even though they're a small %. There's no hard-right populist party in NZ (No - ACT is not hard-right) so they "belong" somewhere - the chance of them voting for any other party is close to zero - unless they're shown the exit door.

I hope Muller doesn't end up like "Scotty from Marketing" across the Tasman. He seems to fit a pattern.

He told media on Saturday he would be displaying it in his new Leader of the Opposition office in Parliament but he has backed down from that pledge.

Muller acknowledged that others had "a different perspective" on the hat.

"I respect that," he told reporters at Parliament today.

"I packed it up in a box when I left the office round there," he said pointing in the direction of his old office "and it will stay in the box."

I have no issue with it personally, what TM is about will be seen, irregardless of his lackofjudgment/createdatalkingpoint/collectsUSStuff/TrumpAdmirer whichever it turned out to be

Credit where due. I am extremely wary of Muller (to put it mildly), but at least he has the sense to back down over a minor issue (unlike Donald Trump). This doesn't necessarily speak to his values, but it does suggest a degree of common sense and pragmatism. That can be useful in future dealings with him.

Yep. It doesn't get as venomous in that direction, will become yesterdays news tomorrow. Get Amy up to speed on the teams ethnicities, and all good to go! I still find that funny, but again, soon be yesterdays news once the TV journo's have flogged it tonight. I will bypass that.

It's the reaction though. The hat is just a stupid hat, it's pretty obvious that a "Trump MAGA hat" is a symbol of intolerance and racism to a lot of people and anyway it's a worthless trinket. He should have chucked the thing in the bin immediately and laughed. Or give it to the reporter as a gift - "here you go - it's yours - try it on for size - if it fits I'll get you a bottle of orange bronzer for Xmas". Trying to justify it as not representing his values blah blah, "I've got a Hillary pin" and "I'm interested in US politics" etc just creates doubt.

Politics is tough. I'll bet Adams cops some flak for her gaffe - and if she doesn't laugh along it's not going to be a good look. If she does - then it'll go away and be forgotten.

My read of the hat saga is that Muller is a political junkie and so keeps it as a souvenir as he said. However I don't think that paints him in a very complimentary light. He views the US politics the same way we would a Bulls vs Lakers basketball game. He views the hat in the same way a basketball fan would a Kobe Bryant jersey. He is oblivious to the connotations around the hat and what they mean to some people. He loves politics for the competition and cares about which team is winning, losing sight of the real-world consequences for everyday people. It would be very unfortunate for that attitude to take hold on the campaign trail here.

Fair call. I think the key issue is context. If I had a Fidel Castro hat that he wore, thats memorabilia. Maybe a Stalin jacket that he wore. History. Museum pieces. If I had and displayed a non real item that had a World War 2 emblem of a nasty foreign leader, thats different. The MAGA cap is a $10 souvenir, but like the previous example its what's behind it that matters.A genuine Stalin jacket vs a KKK jacket, same thing. Museum piece vs abhorrence. That's my opinion.
