I'd rather someone cheat the system in the short-term, if it's necessary for them to upskill, and as a result, not be reliant on the system long-term. I'm not saying it's ideal, and I'd never do it myself, but in many cases the tax payer is probably better off in the long run.

Which comments were those?

We're living in a social democracy with a progressive taxation system, a social welfare system, a nominally free or heavily subsidised education system, and a free or heavily subsidised healthcare system, protection of worker rights and conditions, protections against unfair trade, protections for basic human rights.

If it's "commie" to support what's supported by all centrist parties - then by your definition, we must all be commies.

If you want to argue that all of those systems, checks and balances are wrong are should be abolished, then you're probably the extremist - not almost everybody else.

When people bandy labels about with no idea of what they mean, it does not reflect well on their IQ. But perhaps that is to be expected from someone who accuses me of name-calling in one line, then pretty much accuses me of being a communist in the next, and doesn't seem to see any incongruity in this.

A communist? I find that pretty amusing, as would anyone who knows me, but I guess in the poster's world this is the most horrific name-call he could come up with, short of baby-eater.

I am certainly not a communist, though the label doesn't bother me, except that it is so wildly inaccurate. What I believe in is compassion and giving people the benefit of the doubt. I believe in helping those less fortunate. I believe in what are generally termed 'progressive' ideas. I believe in many of the principles espoused by the Green party, though by no means everything. I believe each of us has a responsibility to others, and that responsibility extends to the environment we all depend on. I believe in a certain generosity of spirit.

But I do not believe in communism. Not even close, and anyone who thinks I do from the comments I have posted on Geekzone is suffering from a serious cognitive malfunction.

From the perspective of a bystander my opinion of the majority of your comments here are that they are borderline toxic. You have a particularly nasty attitude toward anyone who disagrees with you and it is rather unpleasant.

Their politics aren't so much an issue with me, but rather it's the dogmatic, strident and even angry tone in which their views are spewed forth; further, many posts appear to simply be trolling to elicit a bite from someone. The more nuanced discussions that have been possible in the past amongst members with a wide variety of perspectives seem to get side-tracked or simply peter out as, one-by-one, other members get tired of the same old back-and-forth where there's always lots of smoke but little fire,.

I don't think anyone's perspectives or views are going to be changed by this kind of dialogue, and I for one am really tired of it - my guess is, though, given it's election year this is going to continue for the next few months at least... Guess it's time to stay away from these types of "off topic threads!

Yep I have enjoyed GZ for its respectful/robust debate over the years - but a couple of vocal types have brought a different approach to the debate in recent weeks - and quite frankly it makes threads toxic and disengaging seems to be the only option.

Damn shame really and I too hope it gets "better" after the election i.e. more mature, less labeling and more open to alternative points of view.
