GV27:

If National have to give up the landlord stuff or gradually reintroduce interest deductibility over time instead of in one hit then that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I would agree even though it’ll cost me quite a bit of money.

All three parties will have to compromise, that’s how MMP is meant to work.

Edit: BTW interest deductibility was always phased. From memory it went back up 25% per year.

Ah. Well if they're under pressure even with that then I hope they nix it. I've never understood the moral argument of two identical houses being used in the exactly same way, possibly even carrying the same debt, but one generates a massive deduction simply because it is a rental while an owner-occupier bears the brunt of their own mortgage and underwrites the other through general taxation relief.

A brief anatomy of Christopher Luxon's 18 second media scrum and U-turn back to Winston Peters | Stuff.co.nz

“did you overestimate your negotiating skills?”
“has the coalition deal been a victim of your inexperience?”
“Is this starting to get embarrassing for you?”

At the end:

Just twelve hours after his arrival at Wellington Airport, David Seymour was back, and who was right behind him? Christopher Luxon.

The incoming Prime Minister and the guy who – on votes – should be deputy Prime Minister were flying back to Auckland to meet with Winston Peters because he hadn’t flown to Wellington to meet with them.

The day ended with a most remarkable twist – which no one could have predicted – a twist which started the most remarkable and unpredictable next three years of government.

Over one month after the election, the three leaders meet in person. Bizarre. They should have met in person after a day or two, not to negotiate, but just to meet, and decide on a meeting/negotiation framework for the coming two weeks. But no, its all been solo

I think this will be a bumpy and non-working government.

What is going on

Short but productive three party meeting ends

ACT leader David Seymour has left the Pullman Hotel, but no word from the other two leaders.

Seymour said it had been a short meeting, but a good one.

The day after the election Luxon didn't even know if he would need Peters.

IIRC it was known then that they need NZF. Not official until the final results. Even so, since the final results, the 3 leaders only met today in person. Brief. Seymour and Peters have recently met, also brief

How are the negotiations going? Thats a secret, no one knows. They sneak around the media as well. Hardly fills people with confidence

Whataboutism doesn't help.

But that's not what National promised and that's not what some people voted for.

I don't recall getting day-by-day updates on coalition negotiations previously.

And let us not forgot that the 2017 election was in September and it took almost a month and a press conference from Winston Peters for National to even find out who he was going with.

Ok, its all going well and transparently. Possibly based on the great deal of negotiatins that are occurring...

No day-by-day updates but this article has a nice chart on how long negotiations took to form previous governments: How long should government negotiations take? And when is a redo election required? | Stuff.co.nz

Luxon has made much of his ability to get a deal, pointing to his days as a CEO (of Air NZ if you haven't caught that one yet).

As one source told me, no successful person they'd met ever rattled off how successful they were, but Luxon works his own success into many a conversation.

Yeah, she's right about that. Good article by Jenna Lynch.
