The Washington Post - Opinions - Impeachment is now a slam dunk

Oct. 18, 2019 at 9:41 a.m. GMT+13

If one believes that clear and convincing evidence of impeachable acts and additional reminders of President Trump’s grotesque corruption are required to propel impeachment forward, then Thursday may be a significant turning point in the impeachment story.

We saw the confluence of three events.

First, The Post reports, “At a combative session in the White House briefing room, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney acknowledged Thursday that the Trump administration held up U.S. military aid to Ukraine in part because of the president’s request for that country to investigate a Democratic National Committee server.” ...

Second, as if one confession were not enough, the ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, reportedly told the House impeachment panel “that President Trump outsourced the job of handling U.S. policy on Ukraine to Trump’s personal attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani, a decision that made Sondland uncomfortable but one he still carried out.” ...

Third, in an unprecedented display of chutzpah*, Trump announced that next year’s Group of Seven summit would be held at his Doral golf resort near Miami, one of the clearest instances yet of self-enrichment and unconstitutional receipt of emoluments. ...

*  Chutzpah is the quality of audacity, for good or for bad. It derives from the Hebrew word ḥutspâ, meaning "insolence", "cheek" or "audacity".

"Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney"

Well, it does say: He is acting!

Just he is not a very good actor.

This Donald Trump Letter Proves He's Crazy

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Trump lashed out at Democrats, Speaker Pelosi called it a meltdown, the House voted overwhelmingly to condemn Trump's decision to pull our troops out of Syria, Republicans are furious, and the White House tried to do some damage control by releasing an insane letter from Trump to Turkish President Erdogan.

The world knows Trump is an ultra-rich stable genius.

Trump to the Washington Post: "It would take an hour-and-a-half to learn everything there is to learn about missiles. I think I know most of it anyway."

However Trump seems to spend a lot of time on really idiotic money grabbing schemes. Some might even say his deals are all entirely self-serving, hare-brained, and frequently need bail-outs by either his father, hapless investors, or just not paying wages and bills.

Hmmmm, I'm beginning to believe he not as smart or as rich as he says he is.

Mattis mocks Trump's bone spurs during Al Smith dinner speech

CNN

First five minutes are funny. I'd skip the rest.

Former Defense Secretary James Mattis makes light of President Donald Trump calling him "the world's most overrated general" during his keynote address at the annual Al Smith dinner, a philanthropic event where roasts are tradition.

Loved that first 5 min. Very clever and very funny. Pity it summed up the current political disaster in America so well.

Former White House ethics director:

We have reached the bottom’. 'There is no level of corruption greater than a President participating in the award of a contract to himself.

(Actually - there is worse, they're boasting about it, congratulating Trump. Abandoning allies who risked their lives, some dying, supporting you, dooming them to probable death, etc...)

https://www.statesman.com/news/20191017/trump-texas-kept-calling-me-for-money-after-hurricane-harvey

The "Austin American-Statesman" local newspaper By Nicole Cobler

Trump: Texas ‘kept calling me for money’ after Hurricane Harvey

President Donald Trump jeered top Texas Republicans who attended his campaign rally in Dallas Thursday night for their efforts to boost federal aid in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and U.S. Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, sat nearby as Trump pointed at each of them.

“They keep calling me for money,” he said. “It wasn’t even fair.”

Trump continued, telling the crowd: “You made a fortune on the hurricane.”

The 2017 Category 4 hurricane caused extensive wind damage in the Coastal Bend and catastrophic flooding across a broad swath of Texas — damaging or destroying an estimated 300,000 structures — and was blamed for more than 100 deaths in the state.

ollowing Hurricane Harvey, Texas Governor Greg Abbott requested $61 billion in federal aid to repair schools and other government buildings and infrastructure, as well as to build a storm surge barrier in Galveston Bay. Abbott estimated the total cost of Hurricane Harvey to the state, including damage to private property, to be as much as $180 billion.

But Texas hasn’t received close to the amount tied to a 282-project wish list delivered to congressional leaders about two months after the storm. Texas received $4.3 billion in federal money for flood mitigation projects this year and Abbott tapped Land Commissioner George P. Bush this month to oversee the funds’ distribution.

But the storm surge barrier was at the front of Trump’s mind on Thursday night.

“We want one more small request,” Trump recalled state leaders telling him. “We want to build a dam in the ocean. ... It’s only $10 billion.”

“They’re incredible salesmen,” Trump said of the Texas officials. “Can we give Texas an extra $10 billion for something that may work and it may not?”

The Washington Post - State Department probe of Clinton emails finds no deliberate mishandling of classified information

Oct. 19, 2019

A multiyear State Department probe of emails that were sent to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s private computer server concluded there was no systemic or deliberate mishandling of classified information by department employees, according to a report submitted to Congress this month.

The report appears to represent a final and anticlimactic chapter in a controversy that overshadowed the 2016 presidential campaign and exposed Clinton to fierce criticism that she later cited as a major factor in her loss to President Trump. ...

The Washington Post - Mitch McConnell: Withdrawing from Syria is a grave mistake

Oct. 19, 2019

Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, is majority leader of the U.S. Senate.

Withdrawing U.S. forces from Syria is a grave strategic mistake.

It will leave the American people and homeland less safe, embolden our enemies, and weaken important alliances. ...

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I have worked with three presidential administrations to fight radical Islamist terrorism.

I have distilled three principal lessons about combating this complex threat.

  • Lesson No. 1 is that the threat is real and cannot be wished away. ...

  • Second, there is no substitute for American leadership. ...

  • The third lesson is that we are not in this fight alone. ...

We saw humanitarian disaster and a terrorist free-for-all after we abandoned Afghanistan in the 1990s, laying the groundwork for 9/11.

We saw the Islamic State flourish in Iraq after President Barack Obama’s retreat.

We will see these things anew in Syria and Afghanistan if we abandon our partners and retreat from these conflicts before they are won.

America’s wars will be “endless” only if America refuses to win them.

This strong and public criticism of Trump is astonishing, considering that it comes from Trump's chief enabler in the Senate.  😐

I can't see why he (Trumpy) or anyone else would care about the cost of their military campaigns, as the US$1 trillion a year they spend on it is also about the same amount of money they borrow each year.
