"John Key is resigning as Prime Minister of New Zealand. Key made the announcement at his weekly press conference this afternoon." Effective 12 December.

Watching now... this line is interesting: "Key says he had no option but to resign immediately, won't be a "lame-duck leader""

mattwnz: I was thinking A few months ago, that if he was going to resign , now would be the time to do it, as it gives the new leader, most likely English, a lot of time to regroup the party for the election. The thing is that he needed to resign for a lot of changes to be made, as he did promise that things such as retirement age wouldn't be changed under his leadership. I guess those sorts of things are now open. Ther is also now a lot more pressure on him, over things like the property bubble and unaffordable house prices, th growing gap between the rich and working class etc. IMO he has done a valid job, and it is probably one of the worst and thankless jobs in NZ in a lot of ways. But also very rewarding too. But it was time to go because there are a lot of changes that need to be done, as the current system in NZ is not working. Housing is the number one problem in NZ, and it needs changes to the amount of immigrants we are letting in, stopping overseas people buying housing stock, creating competition in the building materials market to name but a few.

 

Another view is that 2010 tax cuts exploded the debt and so they gutted the public service so it's hard to get any service....and dismantling Housing NZ as a housing crisis develops wasn't clever....and they still aren't doing anything useful about climate change even as 2016's global temperatures go off the charts. It's all been a cock-up right from the start, really. 

But I know many people don't like to deal in the long list of very specific policy failures (by the dozen) and prefer instead to think of how they feel about things. 

They liked John Key even as his government stumbled from one mess to the next...most of their their own creation (earthquakes obviously not included). 

 

I don't have anything bad to say about him that doesn't apply equally to every other government MP.
