I thought I'd post my experience here as it may save someone else the hours I've spent chasing this.

We chose Voyager because they have no contract term and a cheaper 30/10 plan (we are trying to escape a dodgy copper line and don't need a massive cap or super fast speeds). The idea of being able to save some money with BYO router was the deciding factor... except it turns out, you can't.

What they don't make clear is that the modem must be able to accept a username/password, Vlan tagging and a static IPv4 address. That's all well and good but all the routers I've checked so far will accept various combination of two of these, but not the third. It appears every other ISP (including the four overseas ones I checked) use dynamic IPv6. Even if you can enter an IPv4 address, Voyager apparently don't know the subnet mask or gateway.

Of course you can buy their router for $220, plus $15 shipping. That's on top of the $50 fibre install fee. Total set up cost of almost $300. This is after being assured by them my old router would work, and when it didn't the HG659 definitely would.

Routers confirmed not to work are: TP-Link TD-W8950N. Vodafone HG659 with Vodafone and Bigpipe firmware. TP-Link Archer C5 TD-W8980. TP-Link Archer C7. TP-Link WR945N.

If anyone else has managed to get their own router working with these guys I'm keen to hear.

Thanks to everyone that posted help, it's working now, there was nothing wrong with the router or my settings. Voyager say Enable (the fibre installer) missed a check in the provisioning and this is not something the call centre staff have access to check. Overall the call centre people were helpful but ultimately gave wrong information about the router setup (IPv4 static DNS is not a required setting). It never would have worked even if I had bought their router. So points for effort but I'm not overly impressed by their service so far.

I'll update the OP with the correct details later in case anyone else has similar issues.
