Very interesting story out today - NZH report here.

There’s another similar story here - on interest.co.nz

RBNZ wants to compel banks to provide hundreds (or thousands) more fee-free, full-service ATMs and/or multi-bank hubs and/or branches - to support the role of cash in society. Discussion Paper open for six weeks.

I can go years without ever handling any cash. However I believe that what the RBNZ is doing is good because cash is still a fundamental and important feature of society for many reasons.

Because of that, IMO cash will not cease to exist within the lifetimes of any of us here. You can’t have such an important societal feature - not the least of which is cash being legal tender - and not have a banking system that keeps its use simple and easy.
