Maybe the Auckland GZ IRL might be the appropriate occasion? In the company of like-minded consenting adults and under MF's tutelage

Do they let hip flasks on planes?

Metal detector, liquids or gels with volume greater than 100 ml, etc - not sure that a flask is going to make it onto a plane. However, put 99 ml of whiskey into a zip-lock bag + drinking straw => away laughing mate.

The liquid quantity restriction is of course only for international flights, not domestic. Not had a problem with a full bottle of scotch in my carry on, but haven't tried carrying it on in a hip flask before.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

I bought a bottle of Johnnie Walker XR (aged 21 years) in Sydney yesterday. Very smooth, although quite heavy:

Usually drink Glenlivet or Talisker when out and about but this one is really nice.

I don't drink much at all but I do have a selection of single malt Scotch on hand which I dip into from time to time (some are from my wedding 10 years ago, so I REALLY don't drink much!)

Available to visitors of taste are:

Lagavullin 16 yo
Laphroig Quarter Cask
Glenlivet 18 yo
Balvenie Founders
Bruichladdich 12 yo
Glenfiddich 18 yo
Ardbeg 10 yo
Tamnavulin 12
Dalmore 12
Caol Isla 16 yo

My personal favourites are the peaty Islay malts and the Quarter Cask in particular is an excellent dram when the rain is lashing the windows!

I'm with you on islay versions. Yum!!! chocolate and caramel flavours with a smokey flavour. THe Bruichladdich 12 yo is espcially nice.

I heard Kevin Milne (of Fairgo fame) on the radio recently saying that he had ordered a bottle of single malt online and that it had taken only a week or so to get from the UK to his RD delivery near Waikanae. He said 'no GST' which sounds right, given the de minimis rule for GST on imported stuff. Now I'm wondering about the excise tax on alcohol - maybe he avoided that too? I'm not sure how that works. Maybe he paid the UK equivalent to excise tax.

Is this a cost-effective way to buy alcohol? Guess it depends on the freight cost which may kill the effectiveness.

For the folks in Wellington, The Portlander runs a club and people are invited to monthly free food and drink events - I am going there later today for a free Jameson's Whiskey tasting - limited numbers, all full now.

I recommend you join the club if you want to be in these things.

Not bad... About ten people present, two representatives, an welcome drink and three different Jameson Irish whiskey to try (incl a 18 year old one). Free refill, good explanation of the process, etc.

Good chat around the two tables, and about 90 minutes total.

Excuse the kitchen in the background. But bought this bottle in Auckland a few months back and jsut got it out for another shot - remembered to take a photo for this thread.

My local bottle store in Tawa has quite an eclectic mix of whisky and whiskeys.

They have several Indian whiskeys I kind of used as a stepping stone into Scotch as I've always preferred Irish whiskey for the 'clean' taste as opposed to the muddy/peaty taste of Scotch-not a Talisker fan.

Thomsons whisky is nice too - NZ made.

If full and smokey is your preferred flavour profile, try Johnny Walker Double Black. I believe it's only available duty free, haven't seen it anywhere else. It has additional Islay Malts in it making it much more full, round and smokey than the standard black label. Very reasonably priced too at around $60 for 1ltr.

I was given a bottle of Glen Dronach 15 - which I am now almost all the way through.

I know you're not "supposed" to - but I enjoy my whisky with ice - with the melting ice diluting it - alter rate of consumption to suit level of dilution.

Talisker is next on the list, then some Glenmorangie
