I have had the privilege of sampling a dram of this! A very tasty and interesting drop :)

I've tried it too - at Scott base no less :). Whisky was ok - setting was superb !

Btw - my avatar is the mailbox outside the original Scott base camp. The milk is of course frozen

Yes - it is certainly a unique flavour - can't say I have every come across anything quite like it.

Maybe it's the arrival of the (relatively) colder weather, or perhaps it's the inundation of junk mail this week given it's world whisk(e)y day this Saturday, but I've found myself thinking about buying a new bottle, but trying something new. Being relatively unexposed to the wide range of options I'm interested in recommendations.

My preference is definitely towards Islay single malts or similar; my go-to buy has been Bowmore 12; My FiL got me a bottle of Caol Ila Distiller's Edition, which I have really loved but clearly too much as it's nearly finished! Another one I've liked (but not owned) is Talisker Dark Storm. I also have a bottle of Ardbeg 10, which I really am not a huge fan of.

So, based on those preferences, what would people recommend at, say, around $100 or less?

Many here seem to love Laphroaig, but I'm once bitten, twice shy given the 10 year's placement on some of the flavour maps (as reliable and useful as these are?!), being so close to the Ardbeg that I don't really like.

It is a tough one as I tend to enjoy a wide range at different times and for different reasons :)

I agree on the Bowmore though, and I always have an Ardbeg or two in the cupboard and a Benriach as well - I do enjoy all of those and they tend to be my defaults.

I drink occasionally, Canadian Club everyday kind of drink (1 serve of course), Friends get together - either Chivas regal or Jamesons. Special occasions JW blue Lable. Not a huge fan of bourbon. Recently tried Jameson Caskmates. That was pretty good as well.

What do you mix your whiskey with?

Lagavulin - not fussy - 8yo/16yo - just try it and thank me later. It's peaty and smokey but it's more in the nose than on the palette. Fair warning though, one dram (even a generous one) is never enough - so give yourself time to appreciate ;).

Good to hear, thanks - looks like it's a bit over my initial budget of $100 (cheapest I've seen the 16 is $130 and 8 is $120), but you make it sound worth it!

Has anyone tried the Talisker 10 year?

My usual is the Lagavulin 16. I had the Talisker Dark Storm which is really nice. The Talisker 10 is really good too.

Glenfiddich is making an "experimental" series but it is 50% more than your budget. But it's a really nice drop.

Thanks; all three of these are on my shortlist, the first two being a bit over budget so I have to convince my wife it's a worthwhile 'investment' or I may end up with the third! I tried Talisker Dark Storm at a pub last year and was very taken with it; more so than Storm.

Relax gentlemen you are diverted by nothing more than base spirit distilled from beer, flavored with a brownish bitter-tasting organic substance present in certain woods.

My advice work your way through the cheap blended until you find a brand you like and save money.

Lagavulin 16 is my clear number 1 as well - and definitely just with a few drops of water.

Regarding price, a good tip (if travelling overseas) is to order it online from a Duty Free store not at the airport, for pickup on arrival back into the country. i.e. the onsite shops charge much more cos they've got you right there and have higher rent etc, but the offsite shops trying to compete with them will discount a lot. For example, I went to Sydney a few weeks ago and ordered a bottle from JR Duty Free for arrival back into Auckland International. Price was $104. I think their standard price is $130, but they do $104 for Auck Intl because they don't have a footprint there. Note, JR now seem to be part of Lotte, but prices etc the same.

and that is good advice. whiskyandmore is the cheapest you can get the Lagavulin 16 from. $109.99 + $4.99 shipping. or buy a 16 and an 8 and get it shipped for free (above $200). :)

lagavulin and ardbeg uigeadale are my staples.

i know ardbeg can be quite overpowering, but i happen to like it (10 or oogie).

Sadly out of stock at Whisky and More, but, given how much many people are pushing this as the go-to drink, I guess I could be patient!

Ah, a bit more digging paid off - I've found the cheapest online price for the Lagavulin 16, AND it's in stock: Scenic Cellars, a great wine/booze shop in Taupo, have it for $105 including delivery. (Free delivery over $100).
