Noticed Geekzone was feeling extra snappy today, looks like Quic have quietly peered with Cloudflare at their new Wellington POP?

Look at this goodness:

tracert www.geekzone.co.nz

Tracing route to www.geekzone.co.nz [2606:4700:20::681a:481] over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  unifi.lan []

You guys really don't miss much! ๐Ÿคฃ

Correct, as at ~12:00 today, we're peering with Cloudflare locally in Wellington. Enjoy the lower latency! ๐Ÿ’ช

Wait a minute. Why is colo=WLG?

Does Cloudflare have a pop down here too?

Not only that, but I bounced my Cloudflare tunnels. They were connected to AKL/CHC and now AKL/WLG, making everything I host at home faster to access.

Very nice, I like.

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup. Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

That's really striking! it's nearly 20 ms from Christchurch to GZ on 2degrees (Enable) fibre. Is there no Christchurch POP for Cloudflare or is 2degrees peering just... bad (in this scenario)?

Quic/Vetta also peers with Cloudflare in Christchurch. ๐Ÿ™‚

Overall we now peer and connect to Cloudflare’s network in CHC, WLG, AKL & SYD.

Amazing, right?

But it's not only Geekzone. There's so much on Cloudflare that Quic/Vetta just made a whole lot more of the Internet faster.

For example, work uses HubSpot, which is on Cloudflare. It's a lot faster now too.

It might be dependent on static IP? I think some ISPs only route dynamic pool IP ranges to closest CDN due to possible asymmetric routing issues.

Either that or they are doing a Spark and peering only given if they are a customer at their on-net datacentre.

2degrees AKL to Cloudflare AKL is 4-5ms from my home 2deg connection. Wonder of 2degrees is routing ex-CHC Cloudflare to AKL.

One NZ mobile in WLG routes to Cloudflare via AKL IX as another point of reference.
