Does my freeNAS box have to be hooked up to my router? or can it just be locally attached to my PC? I'm having a hard time configuring it, and i'm following a guide. I really don't want to run a cat-5 cable from my room to the lounge at my flat.
Suggestions are very welcome, thank you.

I got it going in the end,
Guess what happened?
My main PC didn't have the drivers installed for the NIC so I was faffing around late at night, and didn't even check that off my list for a good hour,
Downloaded the drivers, assigned static IPs and made sure they were on the same subnet, and bam, it runs, as easy as pie.
