Hello folks,

Help!!! I'm a semi-newbie in the MPEG4 world (4-5 months) and I've been struggling with quality issues with DVD's I've ripped and recoded with DVD Decrypter/AutoGK (.AVI) or DVD Shrink/Nero Imagedrive/Recode (.MP4) and then play the resulting files on my new D-Link DSM-320 (with latest firmware upgrade) using TVersity as the server over a wired network (Linksys wired/wireless router).

Basically, the movie will start playing fine for a few minutes then something will cause it to hang temporarily, then the audio begins to precede the video by 4-5 seconds, continuing in a herky-jerky fashion. However, when I play the files on my PC (e.g., with Media Player (e.g.with Media Player, etc.) the quality is good.

I'm inclined to think that this has something to do with some of the various config options in the above-referenced programs, but I'm really not sure. Any suggestions?

An additional bit of info regarding my original post. My TVersity server has a 120gb IDE drive (5400rpm) that I've dedicated to just videos. It has a lot of available space on it, but I'm wondering whether IDE drives have adequate performance. My eventual plan is to get a much larger 7200rpm SATA drive, but I'm trying to get things working well first. I'm just wondering whether that is something that might make a significant difference now as I'm trying to just get things working well.

Also, is my wired 100mb Linksys switch/router adequate for this?

A couple of thoughts spring to mind

1. Are you sure you are encoding your MP4 files with a profile that that the DSM-320 can play? According to the docs the DSM can only play MP4 with Advanced Simple Profile only without quarter pixel or global motion compensation. What about trying a xvid or divx file from the usual download sources :)

2. 100Mbs should be more than fine. I watch divx and xvid over 802.11a with no bandwidth issues

3. There should be no issues with a 5400 IDE drive.

4. Have you tried the media software that d-link provide rather than tversity?

5. Also what about trying swisscenter (www.swisscenter.co.uk). I use this instead of the Pinnacle server for my Showcenter and find it works great

In addition to the suggestions from Ichiu7, try another brand of DVD blanks for comparrison. I've had the very same problems when using so-called "named" brands (e.g. Imation), yet perfect playback on many other players when using TDK.

I've also found that literally any disk will play on the PC due to the superior jiggery-pokery that the media player software can impose on any faults in the video files/flakey disks.

I used to have a 320 and did find a forum which had instructions of how to rip DVD's so that they played correctly on the 320. For the life of me though I cannot find the forum though. I can tell you that I was converting it to xvid. Have a google and I am sure you will find it eventually.

Hello,

I still use a DSM320 for vid streaming all my Vids and yes sometimes it can be a bit jerky depends if transcode is set to and mine is set to Only when needed.

You can uplug your phone connection to the wall and turn off all antivirus, defrags tools and under task manager any other not needed running programes as the more grunt / ram you have the better as it helps transcoding vids.

But the dsm320 is pretty gutless needs a cpu but hey if that was the case I would run a pc or a modded xbox.

Also mine runs better on a cable as wireless isnt consistant as where the router is, walls and power points are etc.

Nero recode is a method of recoding vids but its not free.

There are lots of sites that tell you how do that and do a search as posting these links can breach rules to sites ripping dvds.

All of these hardware players are pretty limited in their support for mpeg4 - just as h264 starts to become the norm for downloaded stuff, these players come out supporting only the most basic of mpeg4, which divx was doing many many years ago.
