I am currently deciding whether to buy a DVD recorder and I have pretty much settled on a panny EH65 to marry up with my Viera. I have looked at the Sonys and the Pioneers but have decided they are all much of a muchness. (happy to be convinced otherwise though).

However, from what I can gather Freeview is about to launch early next month. I notice on the Australian Panasonic website that over there you can get a Panny DVD Recorder with a built in free to air digital tuner. I don't want to go out and buy a new dvd recorder only to find out that the ones with tuners will come out next month.

Does anyone have any info on the likelihood of this happening?

On May 2nd Freeview DVB-S mpeg2 launches. This is a satellite service and requires a set top box. Next March DVB-T H264 (mpeg4) will launch. NB. In Australia the DVB-T system is mpeg2 only.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Cheers for the explanation. So I will defintiely need a set top box for the Satelite version of Freeview (mpeg2) and once the terrestial version is launched Panasonic (and the rest) will probably start putting digital tuners in DVRs.

I also note that some people are picking up cheap top boxes on Trademe. Are you guys just splitting the signal from your sky dish into the sky decoder and your top box?

It will still be some time before you start seeing any TV's or recorders with DVB-T MPEG4 support on the market in NZ.

Several countries have moved towards MPEG4 for DVB-T including France and the UK has a trial in London with a full UK rollout planned and companies will obviously bring products to the market that support this but there is very little available at the moment, most people are having to use set top boxes for MPEG4.

I suspect a lot of NZers will have the odd one or two extra packages after holidaying in Oz <g>.

except no DVB-T stuff will work here, as NZ will be using MPEG4 rather than MPEG2 for digital terrestrial

I emailed Sony NZ to see when the RDRHXD760 would be released here (Digital Tuner model)

Here is their reply:

"The RDRHXD760 will not be made available in New Zealand.

As both DVB-S and DVB-T will be broadcast in New Zealand you can simply connect your DVD recorder to the Freeview decoder.

Heck I know I CAN connect the decoder to the recorder, but it's just not the same thing!!

at www.panasonic.co.uk their DVD recorders also come with "freeview"

not sure of the spec of freeview over there?

I suspect in a year or two we will be able to get equivilent recorders

built into the DVD recorder is really a "must have" I'm nearly temped with "my sky" , just for the sheer conveniance of recording multiple sky channels overnight etc..

"freeview" in the UK is a terrestrial mpeg2 service. There is also "freesat" which is freeview on statlike ala Sky but its uncommon and not much has built in DVB-S tuners.

Digital terrestrial only works well for those who are in direct line of sight of the transmission tower.
