Got a sony home theatre for xmas.But i have a problem.It does not have a optical connection to connect it to my ps3 so i can play games in surround sound.My question is,Is there any other cables/ways i can connect it up so i can play games in surround sound?
I have a 40inch sony lcd tv which has a HDMI cable going to the PS3.
My home theatre has 1xHDMI output
Tv has 2xHDMI inputs
and ps3 has 1xHDMI output

Hi Lillow,

Does the tv have an optical output? If so, connect that to the HT.

If not, you can split the output from the ps3 using one of these http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=3939
Use a DVI to HDMI adapter to resetablish the video signal.

Neither th tv or the home theatre have any optical outputs

Can you take the home theatre back to the store and get something else? Or you can still get surround sound via the Analogue inputs and using pro logic 2. Wont be as good but it will still sound better than the TV speakers sound.

Ok i see two ways to do this.

One way is to use the standard av connector(yellow,red,white)from the ps3 and connect to the "audio in" on the home theatre amp.

Or connect the tv's "monitor out" audio to the "audio in" on the Home theatre amp.

The second option you will have to buy a RCA cable but they are common(you may have a spare cable around the house already).The second option advantage is you can also feed normal TV sound from the TV through the Amp as well.
Check out page 15 of the TV manual(connection H).See how you get on

Connect HDMI from PS3 to TV
Connect Audio from Multi AV out to Analogue In on HT system.

I connected the red/white cords from the ps3 from the ps3 to the HT and its not surround sound but its way better than the tv speakers.The fron two speakers work and the sub,i will try that second option out.Is that for full surround sound?

You may need to select pro logic on the amp to get all the speakers working.Try that.

I think the sony amp you have has a sound field button on the remote.

Since the PS3 has no analogue 5.1 channel outputs, the only way you can get Digital Sound surround(whether Dolby or DTS) is either via the Toslink cable (where you can get DD or DTS) or via the HDMI cable (which will carry a PCM stream that depending on your signal source will carry DD, DTS, Dolby TrueHD )

I suspect your amplifier doesn't have a HDMI input so you will be stuck with either two channel sound or somed sort of matrix sound (Dolby Pro Logic)

i done the second option so now both the ps3 and normal tv have sound coming from the front 2 speakers and sub,i'm pretty sure i cant have full surround sound unless i have a opcial ouput/input which i dont have :(

i also changed the setting on the amp to prologic and all the speakers are now working :) so what i;m grathering its not full surround sound or is it? cause i have been told but heaps of people you need a optical cord and if you dont have one there is no way you can have surround sound?

You cannot get discrete 5.1 sound from a PS3 without either using the Toslink optical connection or the HDMI connection. Using the Toslink connector the PS3 will send a bitstream signal encoded either in Dolby Digital or DTS. The receiver will decode the signal and send 5.1 discrete signals out to your speakers. If you are using the HDMI connector you can tell the PS3 to output a PCM signal (for the PS3 on certain movies this can be a quality up to uncompressed audio - Dolby TrueHD). This can be decoded by any receiver that has a HDMI 1.1 or better connector.

If you are using two channel output, then all the receiver can do is simulate the surround channels using techniques such as Dolby Pro Logic IIx or DTS Surround.

What it comes down to is the Home Theatre unit you have is not suitable for what you want to do.
The suggestions made are workarounds to at least get you better sound than the TV speakers.
Take the amp back or put it on trade me and get one that does the job!
