Hi everyone - I'm a Media Studies teacher at a school, and one of our resource staff has just set up a portable panasonic LCD TV and panasonic blu ray player on a trolley so we can roll it around the school.

It's perfect for whole class/meeting room use, but we're a school that has few traditional classrooms - students are often watching films in small groups of 5-6 in a shared room with other students working on other tasks, and we prefer them to watch the blurays with headphones as not to disturb others.

The issue is that I can't get the headphone jack on the TV working with the bluray player plugged in by HDMI to the tv. Any suggestions? I'm missing something basic, I hope...

Maybe because the TV does not output an audio signal (analogue) when connected via HDMI. Perhaps you could try connecting an analogue audio cable from the BD player to the TV also and turn off HDMI audio on the TV.

Also, check that the TV dosent have a seperate volume control for the headphone socket... my Panasonic had me puzzled for a minute as to why the volume was so low until I discovered headphone volume was a seperate function.

Wow, blurays at school.

When I went to school all we got were grotty old scratched up prints played through an equally grotty old projector.

It will most likely be the headphone volume control (it's in the menus).
Failing that, try the analogue audio out RCA's on the back of the TV. It should work just fine.
I use it to feed audio to wireless headphones, meaning I have individual control over my headphone volume and TV volume...

No worries! It's a huge range- they pick their own texts from a list we provide. (Hence the portable TV and players). Currently, my English students are studying a dystopia theme in English and watching things like V for Vendetta, Gattaca, the Road, Blade Runner, Children of Men, and comparing and contrasting with the novel 1984, various short stories, the comic book series Transmetropolitan and the original V for Vendetta graphic novel for themes and techniques.

My Media Studies students are looking at different narrative and film techniques and how they influence story and manipulate the audience response and have just watched the bluray of Memento, and are watching things like Scott Pilgrim, Shutter Island, Macbeth, Transformers (ARRGGHH), and others they've chosen.

Thanks for the suggestions, team! If I get a free period later on I'll go fiddle with the setup and test what works!

Make sure the overscan is turned off for the Blu-ray HDMI input as TVs usually still have it enabled even for 1080p24 sources. It may be called "HD size 2".

The Panasonic BD players are region-locked for DVDs by default. So if you want to play non region 4 DVDs it'd need to be unlocked which is supposed to be possible from a Panasonic authorised service centre within 1 year of purchase if you have the receipt. Or else there's a way of doing it with a Harmony remote.
