I would personally stay away from 'refurbished' cards... I have had big issues with refurbished gear in the past so unless you are willing to potentially take a bath on it, go for a cheaper, but new model.

The GT220 seemed to be OK for HDTV. certainly no stutter/pixelation on my system . Note however that on my system the video still isn't as silky smooth as it should be with ANY card that I have tried. (ASUS EAH5770 (ATI), Nvidia GT220 or GTX260) Panning and credit rolls are slightly jerky. I suspect frames are being dropped by media centre/media player TV/DVD codec.

Thanks for your post.

I guess what I would be happy with is for the video quality of this PC to be as good and as smooth (generally) as what the xbox 360 is capable of producing as a media extender from a Windows 7 Media Center PC. I am not sure if you have ever used one, they are generally fine, although do still have some issues with credit rolls and fast panning being an issue especially with some american shows such as Hell's Kitchen for example (it almost seems as if they are flickering to my eyes, frame rate differences I guess). Otherwise the picture quality through an xbox 360 seems very clear and it de-interlaces and/or upscales nicely from SD channels.

Also if anyone uses any framerate correctional programs for 7mc that seem to work well for Freeview HD, that would be good to know.

You have officially scared me off from getting a refurbished card, could possibly end up being another drama so i'm happy to can that idea, thanks for your advice. I am contemplatng the Asus passive 430 card just have to check that it should fit fine within the Silverstone GD06 case (the Asus passive 440 model seems way too high).

Hi,

I have also just seen some forum posts regarding bad picture quality on certain tvs, in certain situations. See here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/267972-33-1080-hdmi-hdmi-connected-quality

It states that if the picture looks very pixelated through HDMI (same as I am experiencing) it can be because some tv models have only one particular HDMI port that will replicate a good image for PCs. I currently do not have the computer anymore to test but will be looking at it in the weekend. Has anyone else heard or experienced this issue?

I know it still won't help artifacts when live tv starts etc as that is definitely the ATI card. And having said this I also did try the 6550D on other screens like my Dell ultrasharp and the image was okay better than the sony for live tv, but still quite jaggy etc anyways but it did look particularly bad on the Sony Bravia 32" 1080p LCD that I have so makes me wonder as now i see there is an HDMI with an optional 3.5mm jack input beside it for sound so that would probably be the best suited port for a PC (its HDMI 3). I am still going to get an nvidia card as that would sort the artifact issue and fingers crossed a better screen image quality but just thought this might help any others with squarey image through a 1080p LCD/Plasma etc.

Hi NZ255,

Good to know.. I will be very happy if someone else may also benefit from all my light nights, hair pulling and inappropriate language used while trying to sort this HTPC haha.

Function wise it actually works really well (recording, waking itself, guide listings, Blu-ray playback, a legal DVD and Music Library on the HDD, as well as all normal computing tasks etc) but it just has terrible video quality displaying from the 6550D graphics for DVD and live tv etc. I will definitely keep you posted, hopefully my geforce card arrives by the weekend and I will let you know how it goes.

^%&$ it. Just tried to update BIOS to latest. Went to latest version, wouldn't boot to OS (BIOS fine). Went back to version I was on, now won't even get into BIOS. Corrupt as hell.

Followed the instructions to the letter. Dammit.

Hope you can sort it.

When you updated the BIOS, and it wouldn't boot, had you set the boot priority the same as it was prior to flashing? Did you reset to factory defaults?

Have a look at the motherboard manual and see if there is a BIOS recovery option? My Asus P7P55D-E Motherboard has ASUS crashfree BIOS utility where if the BIOS gets corrupted it will scan the optical drive or USB drive for a BIOS file and attempt to flash the BIOS.

Try booting with the motherboard CD in the CD drive.

Yep I reloaded defaults etc etc Booted into BIOS first each time. I thought the days of a bios update being dangerous were loong gone.

Because the display was all screwy I switched back to a VGA monitor from the HDMI TV. I managed to get back into bios, and regressed back to the version I was on originally. However now will not boot past bios. Not to windows, linux, or even a linux live usb. Basically display dies (ie switches off) after post. Something in the igpu or whatever controls it has borked its self.

Ahh well, an excuse to throw money away on a new board...

Hi smac, can you get into the BIOS or is the screen blank at that point? If there onboard video is this enabled or disabled as suits your configuration?

Did you find anything about bios recovery in the Motherboard manual? Perhaps try the manufacturer for support.

WELL!! I have been corresponding directly with Hauppauge Singapore for a few days now and they basically said that the card is faulty and that they are no longer selling the TD-500 in NZ! They have offered to replace my card with an HVR2210 which is pretty cool!

I'm just trying to find a way to swap it out without waiting for weeks for the cards to go back and forth from Singapore now!
