Maybe I should buy the Sennheiser Momentum true wireless 2 I’ve been holding off on …

And they were on special for $390 at Noels, ending today, pulled the pin.

Ok, had an initial play and compare with my Galaxy Buds.

Fit is same style as Galaxy, which is twist to fit, which works well with me. The Galaxys are smaller in size and slightly more comfortable, but the Senns will be fine.

First impressions, the Senns definitely have a more refined soundstage, especially in the mids. But that said, they are not a million miles away from the Galaxys. But, yes, better (as they should be).

And it's great to have a full suite of control options on the Senns - the Galaxys were limited to play/pause on the iPhone.

And it will be great to have ANC for the train. That said, the Galaxy buds were a perfect fit for my air, so natural sound suppression was pretty good with them, but ANC will be better.

I tend to not tweak equalizers and always run with default (neutral in the case of the Senns), but I would be interested from others if they have found any sound tweaks helpful?

Early days, but initial impressions are positive.

Has anyone tried the Hifiman HE5xx (or HE4xxx for that matter)?

I was thinking of broadening my horizons from my two sets of Sennheisers (HD569 and HD6xx), and they seem to come up as another recommendation in that price bracket.

Happy with my Sennheisers, but given my afinity for different driver types, I'm interested in trying some planars for not-lots.

A long time ago I bought the HE400i's but I didn't like their comfort and the sound wasn't different enough from my HD650's so I sold them.

I have heard good things about the HE500's though comfort-wise and house sound of Sennheiser usually wins for me. I picked the Beyer T1's as a step up from the HD650's. I recall the HE500's requiring quite a bit of driving from a decent amp.

Thanks, good points. Doing a little digging, and adding a little bit of salt, I can see that others share your opinion. I was looking at some locally as well on TM, but they are priced almost as much as getting them from Drop.com, plus general concerns with Hifiman's QC, so why bother.

You also have a point about the step-up as well; I might just save my pennies until I can get an ACTUAL upgrade as opposed to something "different". I really like the construction of the Beyerdynamics, but the T1s might have to wait for me though; I wouldn't live long enough to enjoy them, since we are supposed to be saving for a wedding haha.

In the meantime, I went completely the opposite way and picked up a cheap set of Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless (Gen 1) from TM to see if that is another avenue I want to throw money down...

I’m a couple of weeks into my Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless (gen 2), so here’s my thoughts.

It took me a while to get used to them. They sound great, separation and clarity are excellent. I’m still finding instruments I never knew existed in many tracks that I know well! That said, after years of listening to bass-enhanced headphones (here’s looking at you Sony) I initially lamented the lack of bass, but now am slowly adjusting to listening to music the way it was originally intended!.

Fit is good. Not quite the perfect fit my Galaxy buds had, but that’s person-specific to ear size.

ANC is ok, just ok. I get better natural sound suppression from the Galaxy bud’s perfect fit than the Senn provide with ANC, but in most situations it is perfectly adequate. The touch controls and app are great and the transparent function works great if you need to tune back instantly to the outside world.

The negatives. These things are as slippery as heck and next to impossible to hold onto, I’ve already dropped them several times and now have to be very careful when taking them in and out. They are also not the loudest, you really need to pump them up on occasions.

Overall, I’m very happy with the purchase.

Just a heads up in case any 1000XM4 users haven't noticed -there's a new FW that's been released. Has made a notable difference to voice calls 👍🏽

I recently got a pair of 1000MX4's for open plan office use and I have to say I'm a very disappointed by their ANC performance.. I have a pair of ANC headphones I picked up while I was in China I swear the ANC performance is better at a 5th of the price :(

Audio quality is very good however! can't get it working properly in teams or mobile calls though, sounds like im underwater. fine in zoom

Hi I'm wondering if someone can please help me.

I own both the Sony WH-1000XM3 and the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless (Gen1). I'm currently considering upgrading my earbuds to the WF-1000XM4 but I'm seeking to understand battery life a little better with earbuds.

One of the reasons I love my XM3 overears is the battery life eg when not in use I don't have to charge them for months - obviously the batteries are a lot bigger therefore can last a long time. But on the flipside the battery life on the Sennheiser earbuds is absolutely shocking - specifically when you fully charge them and within days they are dead (without any use). Obviously they only have quite small batteries but even so I thought they might last 2-3 weeks on a full charge sitting in the case not being used. I bought the Sennheisers when they had only just been released and was hoping that Sony would release a firmware update to improve the battery but this never happened. Instead I think they just focused on this issue for the next version.

As a general rule what should my expectations be for a fully charged set of earbuds in the above situation?

Does anyone here own the WF-1000XM3 who can comment on the battery situation eg Fully charged in the case not used approximate time holding a charge - as this would give a base to understand how the WF-1000XM4 would be.

I have looked online and this doesn't show up in the general specs/stats. They do mention stand-by time but I believe this is different again.

Aside from the battery issue the Sennheisers sound great although at times can be lacking in volume. And so if all earbuds suck in the above situation should I just resign myself to being more organised and zap a little charge in my existing pair when ever I need them? Or has technology improved sufficiently in the last 2 years to make purchasing a new pair worth while?

How long have you had your Momentums? One characteristic of true wireless headphones is that the batteries tend to wear out quite quickly due to the high energy density.

I bought the Momentum True Wireless 2 back in March so mine are reasonably new. I charge them when the orange LED indicates the "not enough to give the earbuds a full charge" state which theoretically means that the case is 33% charged. This typically occurs after roughly ten hours playback over a period of four days.

I haven't used the Sony equivalent but I would be surprised if they are significantly different.

I've had the Momentums from early 2019 from memory. I am aware that the batteries on the earbuds will wear out quite quickly (although I'm hoping mine might last a little longer for now as I haven't used them that intensely).

The issue I had with them was from day 1. I found out through other owners posting online (as well as a number of online reviewers) that I wasn't alone and in fact it became a well known issue.

I believe they corrected the issue for the next gen but ignored any fix for the originals (or perhaps the fix was a little more than a firmware update). To the best of my knowledge Sony never made any "official" comment or if they did I had stopped investigating by then.

I'm a bit confused. In your first post you indicated that you had problems with battery life on your Sennheiser headphones, but in your subsequent post you refer to Sony being at fault.

Either way I think you've answered your own question; a new pair of true wireless headphones from Sennheiser or Sony is unlikely to experience the same problem. I've just done a quick calculation based on the manufacturer specifications and my own experience, and I would estimate that the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 would take 21 days to deplete from 100% to 0% when left in the case unused.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant to say Sennheiser & not Sony (Late night).

21 days sounds about right as to what I would expect/hope. Thanks for your comments.

I have the Senn Momentum True Wireless Gen 2, owned them for about a month. I use each day for about 2.5 hours and charge the case daily when I arrive at work, takes about 20 mins to fully charge the case. Daily charging is something I took for granted when I purchased them - this is the price for their convenience.I don’t think you should buy in-ear wireless if battery life and lengthy time between charges is what you want/expect.

I also have Sony WH1000XM2 but rarely use them now as I much prefer the in-ear. I did put them on this week after several months of non-use to find battery level was still very good. The Sony over ears are great practical headphones, have superb noise cancelling, but just don’t offer the freedom of in-ear.

Other than my phone I consider my headphones my own personal luxury which both pairs are. I am still learning/evolving as to which pair to use and when. The XM3 I've only had for about 9 months but I'm loving the bigger sound stage which these bring due to being over ears and following my experience with the Momentums the convenience factor of just picking them up at any time knowing that there will still be battery charge in them.

I'm needing to shrug off the baggage I have about Senn coming to the party and providing an update to improve the battery performance. Unfortunately I got my hopes up when I saw on a number of other forums representatives of Senn advising that they would fix this issue with an update (which never came). Regardless I can still pop them on charge for 10-15 minutes and get an hour or so at any time and like you say I imagine for a lot of people who use in ear headphones regular charging is just the norm.

It’s an interesting comparison between the two. Like you, I love the bigger sound stage of the Sony over ear, but the in-ear Senns have better clarity and separation - I literally hear instruments in tracks I love that I’ve never noticed before.

In short, for me, for music, both are essential luxuries daily use, but the Senns are my go to favourite at the moment.
