Have you tried your setup with the Sky HDi outside of your cabinet. The recuring dropout problems could be temperature related. The fact that the dropout's only occur on HDMI may mean that that part of the circuitry is more sensitive to heat.

So much to learn, so little time.

I have been mercifully free of dropouts for the last fortnight, without having taken any remedial steps. But I can't help wondering if the ventilation factor is significant, as Ancestral Geek has just pointed out.

The cabinet I am using came with a shelf provided for a video recorder, and a space below for storing video tapes (now ancient history!). Perhaps like other people have done, we used this storage area to mount the Sky decoder. No problem.

Now we use that space for the MySky HD. Apart from the hole I drilled in the back to allow the cables to access the decoder, there is no other ventilation provided.

So if other people have made use of their (old) cabinet in the same way, a device sensitive to temperature is in a risky environment if installed in what was originally just a storage box.

My suggestion, for what it is worth, is to drill ventilation holes at the back of your cabinet, both along the top and along the bottom (to allow for convection cooling).

Thanks for the suggestions.  Now have the unit sitting on top of the cabinet, placed on some bits of wood for extra air circulation underneath.  While it seems a bit cooler it still hot and has the drop-out issue (not that I should have to have it positioned is such a way to overcome poor design, build and testing!!)  No response from Sky technical support yet for heat, drop-out or not entering standby properly issues I reported.

This is encouraging.

My unit normally stays on 24 x 7, got up to find it in stand-by this morning so thought I'd check if there had been any updates.

Results:
S/W version was 23.1.0.5.14; now 38.2.0.7.14
O/S version was C02P117; now C021004
(how do they decide their version numbering????Foot in mouth)

Spent a good 15 minutes trying to 'hang' it by recording SkySport 1 and 2 and playing, ff'ing, rew'ing, pausing a recorded program.  No lock-ups.

Then on the off-chance I tried to flick to a third channel and , very surprisingly, was able to do so.  It seems the 3rd tuner has been enabled.  (Disclaimer, it was early and I was still half asleep so my testing may have been flawed.)

Looking forward to hear other people's experiences.

Ours stays on 24/7 with a PS3 on top of it as well and have never had any problems in six weeks either. Unit was in standby this morning as well, fired it up and certainly seems faster on channel selection is one thing I noticed, looks like they have done something.

I had the same, my unit is on 24/7, found it off, checked software and the follwoing had changed
Software 23.1.0.5.14-> 38.2.0.7.14
OS CO2P117-> CO21004
EPG U_1.0.16.1 -> U_1.0.26

Have twice been recording 2 things and able to watch a third live programme, I thought I had made some mistake but thats 2 of us now reporting it, so somethings happening.

By the way, i've had no dropouts and but havbe had many lockups, ALWAYS related to recording 2 shows then using the remote control. Not repeatable but always involves use of the remote. I will now try to break it with the new software.

Does anyone know if, for those still on the old s/w and o/s versions, the forced upgrade instructions for the Foxtel IQ will have the same effect here?

At work so havent tried.......

From an Australian forum (no responsibility for spelling mistakes!):
It is also possible to force the iQ to download the latest version of
software (which may be the same as the current version that it has). To
force a software download:

* Press select and back together on the STB.
* Wait for all the lights to come on.
* Press power up down power on the STB
* The software download takes plcace.

Spoke to one of the techs at the Homeshow last night about this, he said they were trying to fix the problem.

He said they now believed it was to do with the mutiple tuners and was more likely to hang when you flicked passed a HD channel eg 2 to 3 to 4.

It could also happen if the last channel you watched was HD then a background record kicked in on an SD channel.  But not always!

The default behaviour was to reboot automatically but he said it doesn't even do this.

They had tried some firmware fixes but they hadn't worked.  I guess this might be delaying the enabling of the third tuner as it could make it worse.

The fixes are in the pipeline, but no dates, I said it was annoying that customer service fudged around and blamed energy saving light bulbs! he laughed and said he couldn't comment on that side of Sky!

And the sad thing is that the energy saving light bulb issue (and some plasma/lcd backlights) is a well discussed and known issue in Australia with the same box.

Check the DTV Forum for Foxtel (focus on the bug reports and pending issues thread).

I just got MySky HDI installed yesterday and was wandering why a recording failed this morning, turns out the unit firmware was upgraded... originally there were two tuners active, there is now four! Guess I picked the right time to get it installed? Have had no issues with freezes or the such yet (fingers crossed!). Firmware numbers match above quoted.

Yes I'm getting same software version and can record 2 programmes and watch another.  This is great because I record both news on 1 & 3 at same time and skip throught stories I'm not interested in.  It was getting annoying not being able to switch to another channel while I was waiting on them to record a bit.  A shame you can't record 3 channels at once though, which I assumed would be the case.

Also it is great to see The Box in Widescreen (and Preview channel), 2 down, 20 to go.

Thought that I had lost the plot this morning when I noticed that the Sky HDi unit was on standby. Thought parent had lost plot when called this evening to say Sky HDi was was on standby. Fired up computer, reached out to Geekzone and there was the answer.

Same O/S and S/W details as above.

Don shades before doing this. Navigate to Signal test and you can do away with lights (energy saving ones anyway). All four tuners detailed.

Away to see if I can record three channels.

Update.

Was not expecting that plan to work but it was worth a try. However it does mean that, with the aid of the pana HDD recorder, I can record three channels at once.

All I need now is the time to watch it all.

So much to learn, so little time.
