As the JBNZ website is showing the same artwork for The Equalizer 3 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD releases, its quite likely that the 4K Ultra HD art will be the same as the US one. I'll confirm  nearer release date.

The link to Cutthroat Island states that it has a Blu-ray with bonus features: This is not the case. Its a 4K Ultra HD only release.

I can confirm that the audio for U-571 4K Ultra HD is indeed DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1.

US RETAIL GIANT BEST BUY PLANS TO EXIT THE PHYSICAL MEDIA BUSINESS NEXT YEAR!

In late July came the news Disney was ceasing new DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD physical media releases in Australia. Whilst other distributors in the country haven’t officially announced similar plans yet, it is being seen as a sign of things to come.

Now, in a major report today, long-running and well-respected home video news site The Digital Bits has learned from their industry sources that United States retail giant Best Buy plans to exit the physical media business next year – possibly as soon as the end of the first quarter of 2024.

They add that they’ve confirmed the news with multiple sources. The site alleges that the policy shift includes not just U.S. in-store Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD sales (which were already being phased out) but online sales as well.

As the site notes, distributor Paramount has quietly shifted their Blu-ray and 4K SteelBook exclusive titles to online retail giant Amazon and it’s likely other studios will follow that lead in the coming months.

Today’s report follows on from one back in August which suggested Walmart, the largest retail seller of discs, was in apparent talks with Studio Distribution Services (SDS) to manage parts of the retailer’s own physical media operation.

The site advises that despite the report today that “no one should rush to the conclusion that this spells the end of physical media”. Even so, they say it’s clear that the ‘Golden Age’ of physical media is long gone and what’s left is a thriving (albeit only narrowly profitable) industry catering to diehard fans and collectors.

As they advise – buy the titles you want while you still can because the studios will not keep releasing these titles on disc forever.

Source: The Digital Bits

One good thing to come out of this, is that we will be able to purchase previously unattainable SteelBook titles from Amazon; albeit at a wallet bursting price when shipping and GST are added. Still, its an option that we didn't have before.

I've been expecting that Amazon will become the last man standing in this market place,

Whether they and the studios will then decide to leverage pricing of physical product into the "collector" price  bracket in a similar way that places charge ridiculous $$$ for vinyl remains to be seen,

But I have a feeling that's where things are headed...

Umbrella Entertainment have already released The Last Wave (1977) in Australia, but its not due for release at JBNZ until October 25th.

Whilst its classed as  a 4K Ultra HD release, there are some things that I thought buyers should know. As with the recent Razorback 4K Ultra HD release, the disc is actually in Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) as opposed to High Dynamic Range (HDR) which is usually the norm for Ultra HD releases. It also has the Rec.709 Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) associated with SDR and not the Rec.2020 WCG associated with HDR.

I'm not sure if it has had a new 4K scan or has just been upscaled, but at a price of NZ$49.98, I would expect much more for my money. I'll add it to the schedule and you can make your own mind up as to whether its worth buying, or not.

Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Peter Weir explores a startling world on the brink of apocalypse in The Last Wave, a time and place where Mother Nature and human nature are destined to collide in catastrophic disaster. When lawyer David Burton (Richard Chamberlain), is assigned a case to defend a group of indigenous Australian men, he is unprepared for the nightmares and dreamscapes ahead. Accused of murdering one of their own, the men stand trial amidst suspicious circumstances and, as Burton becomes plagued by unsettling visions, he is drawn to the mysterious Chris Lee for answers to his torment. As the erratic climate turns dangerous, Burton senses a greater power at play, where tribal customs and the ancient ideas of Dreamtime may be more than just an ominous warning. Featuring atmospheric cinematography by Oscar® winner Russell Boyd, The Last Wave is a haunting journey into the depths of the unknown, where dreams and nightmares conspire as one, now presented in stunning 4K UHD for the first time.

GHOST DOG: The Way of the Samurai (1999) - Classics Re-Mastered

Forest Whitaker (Ghost Dog) lives above the world, alongside a flock of birds, in a homemade shack on the roof of an abandoned building. Guided by the words of an ancient samurai text, Ghost Dog is a professional killer able to dissolve into the night and move through the city unnoticed. When Ghost Dog's code is dangerously betrayed by the dysfunctional mafia family that occasionally employs him, he reacts strictly in accordance with the Way of the Samurai.

Featuring moody cinematography by the great Robby Müller, a sublime score by the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, and a host of colorful character actors (including a memorably stone-faced Henry Silva), Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai plays like a pop-culture-sampling cinematic mixtape built around a one-of-a-kind tragic hero. The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and remains one of Jarmusch's best-loved films.

THE OTHERS (2001) Classics Re-Mastered

Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman (Best Actress, The Hours, 2003) delivers an unforgettable performance in this gothic supernatural thriller. In 1945, Grace (Kidman) and her two children wait for her husband's return from the war, living an unusually isolated existence behind the locked doors and drawn curtains of a secluded mansion in Jersey. Three mysterious new servants arrive and it becomes chillingly clear that there is far more to this house than can be seen, and Grace finds herself in a terrifying fight to save her children and preserve her sanity. Acclaimed by critics, the unpredictable twists and turns of this compelling psychological horror classic will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Universal Pictures have announced the release of the Box-Office hit; Oppenheimer (2023) on 4K Ultra HD which also includes a 1080p Blu-ray of the film, and three hours of special features on a Bonus Blu-ray disc (3-Disc Set).

The film will be presented in the HDR10 video format and will have a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 audio track. Those specs are in line with previous Christopher Nolan UHD releases. Nolan is not a fan of Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos. Having said that, his soundtracks are usually excellent.

JBAU have a Standard Edition and a SteelBook Edition up for pre-order on their website. I expect JBNZ to add the film to their pre-order list soon.

Australian Release Date: November 22nd

In addition to this coming soon post; Ezy DVD have several 4K Ultra HD titles listed on their website for December. I expect JBAU/NZ to add them at a later date.

December 6th

The Fugitive (1993)

The Color Purple (1985)

The Nun II (2023)

December 13th

Blue Beetle (2023)
