OPPENHEIMER (2023) STEELBOOK

Written for the screen and directed by Christopher Nolan, OPPENHEIMER, thrusts audiences into the mind of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), whose landmark work as the director of the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory created the first atomic bomb. An unprecedented cinematic event, OPPENHEIMER features an all-star cast that includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh.

  • SPECIAL FEATURES
  • THE STORY OF OUR TIME: THE MAKING OF OPPENHEIMER
  • NOW I AM BECOME DEATH - The cast, crew and producers join Christopher Nolan in sharing the personal stories that made them passionate about the project's ambitious design for bridging multiple genres.
  • THE LUMINARIES - OPPENHEIMER's all-star cast discusses how they synthesize the script's dramatic narrative with the real lives of historical figures to embody their complex characters.
  • THE MANHATTAN PROJECT - To visualize Oppenheimer's ability to see different dimensions and to recreate the historic Trinity test, filmmakers developed unique techniques to craft stunning effects without using CGI.
  • THE DEVIL OF DETAILS - A look at how production designer Ruth De Jong and team recreated the entire town of Los Alamos with period-accurate props, spectacular sets and painstaking attention to authenticity.
  • WALKING A MILE - Costume and makeup craftspeople populate OPPENHEIMER's immersive environments with iconic figures by utilizing thousands of pieces of clothing and cutting-edge prosthetic applications.
  • CAN YOU HEAR MUSIC? - Working closely with Christopher Nolan, Ludwig Göransson composes a deeply personal, historically expansive score ranging from the organic to the alien to accompany the visual landscape.
  • WE CAN PERFORM THIS MIRACLE - Christopher Nolan's closest collaborators demonstrate how his artistic vision creates camaraderie that drives his talented crew to continue breaking new ground in filmmaking.
  • TRAILERS
  • INNOVATIONS IN FILM: 65MM BLACK-AND-WHITE FILM IN OPPENHEIMER - FotoKem opens the door to its film labs, where new technologies are invented for using color and black & white 65mm film to visualize OPPENHEIMER's dual timelines while pushing the format further forward.
  • MEET THE PRESS Q&A PANEL: OPPENHEIMER - Chuck Todd moderates a conversation where Christopher Nolan, author Kai Bird, and physicists Dr. Kip Thorne, Dr. Thom Mason and Dr. Carlo Rovelli reflect on the fascinating science and doomsday concerns OPPENHEIMER illustrates onscreen.
  • TO END ALL WAR: OPPENHEIMER & THE ATOMIC BOMB - Explore how one man's relentless drive and invention of the atomic bomb changed the nature of war forever, led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and unleashed mass hysteria.

  • MEET THE PRESS...

Saw this and got all excited, hoping Meet The Feebles was finally coming to UHD. Peter Jackson promised us this one almost five years ago.

I only just picked up these two additions to Mighty Ape's pre-order list as I was doing my last check when putting together the weekly schedule.

Oppenheimer (2023) has been added [$40.00] and Reservoir Dogs: Special Edition (1992) has also appeared [$54.99] There was a Special Edition announced last year. Maybe this is a re-release.

I've been sniffing around for 4K Ultra HD bargains lately. My first four arrived from Amazon US today (only took a week). I took advantage of a Prime Member offer where many titles were only US$10 each and free shipping for spending over US$49. I got a 30 day free membership which I will cancel before its time to pay 😁. I'm still waiting for Man of Steel which was posted after the first four..

If anyone is interested in buying the Oppenheimer 4K Ultra HD SteelBook; Online retailers with exclusive rights have reportedly sold out their allocations already after a couple of days. HMV UK and Best Buy USA are sold out. They may have more coming, but its not a given.

JBAU are "Running Out" and I don't know what the situation is at JBNZ. It looks like a really decent SteelBook with excellent artwork. If you plan on getting one for yourself or as a Christmas present for someone else, it may be wise to pre-order now. I just pre-ordered mine.

Browsing the JBAU website, I see that several SteelBook titles have already sold out weeks before their pending release dates. Is this the future of physical media? Studios may realize that if they are to keep releasing 4K Ultra HD movies in disc format, SteelBook only releases may be the way to go in the future. Already, niche SteelBook providers such as Blufans (China) and Manta Lab (Hong Kong) almost always sell out at the pre-order stage; though they don't have unlimited quantities and they keep the numbers low (ish) so that buyers are getting a truly limited product. Personally I'm not interested in all of the tat that comes with some of the releases. I don't need fancy lenticular slip covers/boxes, or collectable film cards etc., etc. I have bought several titles from both of these sellers and I must say that they are Premium SteelBooks (glossy, debossed, embossed, etc.), but the price could be prohibitive to some collectors.

SteelBook titles Sold Out at JBAU are:-

  • Barbie
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
  • Oppenheimer
  • Gran Turismo
  • Meg 2: The Trench
  • Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part 1

All of the above SteelBook titles are still available at JBNZ.

Movieman: though they don't have unlimited quantities and they keep the numbers low (ish) so that buyers are getting a truly limited product. Personally I'm not interested in all of the tat that comes with some of the releases.

I rip the movie (or TV show) and put the disk(s) on the bookshelf, never to be touched again, so I'm only interested in the data, not the packaging.

I can understand doing limited production runs, but limited editions and any artificially created scarcity just encourage piracy. Take for example the Columbia Classics Collection Volume 1. Copies of Lawrence of Arabia were being flogged off on eBay for absurd amounts of money. Personally, I would feel much more guilty lining the pockets of an opportunistic seller than I would not paying for something I cannot buy.

I tried to buy Stripes from Columbia Classics Collection Volume 2 on eBay, which was inexpensive as it wasn't the title most people wanted, but at the time (thanks COVID), it just wasn't possible to get it shipped for a reasonable price.

This habit of doing 4Ks that only have 4Ks with no bluray included is annoying. So while not being interested in steelbooks, sometimes they're the only ones that do add the bluray. And then the steelbook premium can be $5, or it can be $20, who knows why.

I've been browsing though JB's sites / sales in both countries, and its getting difficult to find anything I actually want. Of course if I do want it, they haven't actually got it, or won't send it. Sometimes I look at 'classics' but think, whats classic about that...old does not equal classic, and I personally have no idea why why anyone would want Chucky 47 or whatever in 4K. Each to his / her / their own I suppose.

Unfortunately it’s a bit of a lottery at JBAU. I was lucky with the four  titles I put in the basket (1917, Black Hawk Down, The Secrets of Dumbledore SteelBook and Gladiator).
