I dismantled many TVs for parts and gave away or dumped a lot of speakers from inside.

Samsung, JVC, Panasonic, Sony - all had internal speakers connected via connectors very similar (not nessesarily compatible) to PC FAN connectors.

Unplug TV, unscrew back cover, do not touch main power board straight away. High Voltage dissipates through bleeding resistors in a few minutes.

Trace usually white/red wires going from speakers to one of the boards. Cut in a convenient place.

Connect wires from the board to the external wires going to external speakers. You may use DIY interconnector somewhere on the side. Those connectors for connecting external Speakers can be bought in Jaycar/Surplustronics or salvaged from old amplifiers.

10W output per channel many TV have is enough to drive good quality external speakers.

I was checking out Veon TVs at The Warehouse today and noticed that all of them now have audio out - 3.5mm headphone and RCA coax.

Does anyone know their behaviour? I.e. does plugging into the headphone jack mute the onboard speakers, does the remote volume control adjust the volume through the headphone jack? I'm assuming that the coax puts out a constant-volume audio feed.

If they are labeled headphone then they most certainly will be varied, since most people would be connecting passive headphones without any volume control on them.

Adding speakers to a TV from the internal speakers will never be any good. The reason they can get loud volumes from small speakers is because they are so heavily filtered. If you put full range into those crap little drivers then the would just be clicking away as they hit their limits everytime something happened that was more than a quiet noise. Will mean still no bass from anything you add to them, and possibly way too much high end since they will equalise that up for the crap single drivers rolloff.

I bought a 42 inch Veon after my previous post in this thread. As expected, great picture for price, hopeless audio. The TV has two analogue audio outputs, one labelled 'pc', the other, headphones. I brought out my old A&R Cambridge amp and tried it with both. They both worked, but the pc out is line level, meaning the volume has to be controlled from the amp, which was made way before any remotes existed. The headphone out can be controlled from the TV remote, and quality is just as good through the VCR input on the amp, so I use that. I'm pretty sure both jacks kill the TV audio when connected. The headphone one definitely does.

That's great, thanks guys.

My plan is to have a Topping T-class amplifier powering bookshelf speakers, taking audio out of the headphone jack and using the USB power signal to turn the amp on/off for a seamless setup.
