Sadly my older technology Athlon XP 2800+ desktop averages about 168W or about $275 a year. Think I might be keeping my desktop turned off a lot more.

Try running "Coolon" for windows or "Athcool" for linux on that box. AFAIK there were never any official drivers that enabled the powersaving features on the older XP processors. Drops my power from 90W to 75W using a 2000+.

openmedia: I've just had a play with one of those elto meters and a myPVR 2.0 test system. Generally the system averages under 60W which based on the cost calculator was about 1.1c/hr or about $96 a year (ex GST) which really isn't too bad for a 24/7 PVR.
