Seems to be high. Like on my aquarium lights, the ones with electronic ballasts actually get higher wattages then the ones with magnetic despite it being known that electronic ones are more efficiant.

The heaters are spot on however. Just another case of the marketing department not understanding the limitations of the design given to them by some technician I guess ;)

I've just had a play with one of those elto meters and a myPVR 2.0 test system. Generally the system averages under 60W which based on the cost calculator was about 1.1c/hr or about $96 a year (ex GST) which really isn't too bad for a 24/7 PVR.

Sadly my older technology Athlon XP 2800+ desktop averages about 168W or about $275 a year. Think I might be keeping my desktop turned off a lot more.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Try running "Coolon" for windows or "Athcool" for linux on that box. AFAIK there were never any official drivers that enabled the powersaving features on the older XP processors. Drops my power from 90W to 75W using a 2000+.

Tried athcool and it causes the system to lockup big time i'm afraid.

Good discussion.As the OP I may have made some inflated assumptions about power usage (plus I has misread my bill thinking it was monthly but in fact is two monthly) but it does make you wonder. I have a Athlon 2600+ with 3 drives attached as the server. I am sure it is using at least 200W. At 17c/unit that adds up to $25/month (before GST).
