Well it looks like the NZ Herald also think getting some decent sci-fi TV is a good thing check this article out http://blogs.nzherald.co.nz/blog/griffins-tech-blog/2008/4/21/its-high-time-sky-got-sci-fi-channel/?c_id=5

Lets try to get everyone we know both off this site and otherwise to head over to the Herald and register their support for a sci-fi channel under the story's comment section...

It might not make a difference but then again sitting back and saying nothing wont make much of a difference either!!!! Click that link and help us make it happen!!!!!!

First you wont get a carbon copy of the scifi channel outside the US because of the limitations on programme distribution, ie the US run window will prevent you seeing Lost/other first run shows within days/weeks of the US run,

Second, the channels that Sky (NZ/Aus) put together here are basically just licensing the name off the original broadcaster and then filled with whatever stuff Sky can purchase off the studio shelves.

Third Sci-Fi veiwers in NZ and prob AUS, get SHAFTED on a regular basis, e.g. you can buy season 3 of BattleStar Galctica here on DVD, and as yet it has not appeared on broadcast TV at all, (Sky or otherwise) Season 2 was the same from memory,

Therein lies the problem. We would not get the SciFi network as screened in the US because of programme licensing issues so some Australian clone. I suspect most folks would be disappointed with that.

I would be keen to get it but only the US one - not some knockoff. Even networks like History Channel don't show the US stuff until much later. For example I first watched Dogfights in the US and thought that's way cool but it took ages for that to come to the local History Channel.

I think if you want to watch those shows, find other ways

One attraction to the sky bean counters could be the high uptake of HDi boxes if the put on Sci fi HD boxes. We are all tech savvy to some extent so there is more liklehood a greater percentage of uptake than the genral populus.

Woa! Moi Peter Griffin??? Not on your nelly! I'm stoked that one of the one of the most well known tech journalists has weighed in though as having someone of his calibre following this could give Sky a real incentive to at least respond.. BTW Maurico can confirm I am definitely not the family guy or Peter Griffin the tech journo!!!!

Personally I gave up on TV giving good SciFi, sure there's a few shows on (Dr Who re-runs at the moment for example) but by and large the NZ populace isn't really interested in SciFi, so we who are get sod all.

So, I go to BitTorrent, and I don't even feel bad about it, because it's either that, or not see it at all, so i figure who's losing out... not me. If it's good, I'll buy the DVD's still because of the better quality and shiny boxes.

Every Saturday night lately I've been putting in a Farscape DVD from the box set and sitting through it. Last Saturday was particularly engrossing (that, or I was particularly avoiding doing actual work) and I watched 8 episodes back to back. Of Series 4. Which has STILL not been played here (infact, I don't even think Series 3 has) - although I did happen to catch the tail end of Peacekeeper Wars on TV2 I think at some ungodly hour, I guess they must have bought it in a bargain sale and as usual hadn't gotten around to giving it the slot it deserved so threw it out in the middle of the night just so they don't waste the money before the rights expired or something.

Next up will be BitTorrenting the current Doctor Who series, while Sky sits about on it's chuff repeating what it's already played (and claiming it as "new" just because they are now showing Confidential afterwards).

And while I'm on the subject of "New", not that I watched it, but does it annoy anybody else when TV3 are claiming that "Dexter" is a "new", when infact it's already had a season played on Prime (or was it Sky 1 or whatever that station is called now).

Just check Patdude's name. He is known for being on some TV programs, and on those DSE videos about digital cameras. He's a man of tech.

We finally met face to face last week during the Freeview HD launch. And Peter Griffin was there too. So certainly not the same person.
