dont worry about page files or swap partitions. if you have more than 2gig of ram they hardly ever get used. particually for linux

having your windows page file on its own partition doesnt improve performace as its on the same physical drive, and if you have lots of ram it doesnt really get used. imo its a waste of time. those tweaks were for in the 500mhz cpu days when ever single clock cycle mattered.

now days if it slows you down 0.002% who cares closing msn will give you more of a performance boost

I have 6 gigs and are frequently seeing the swap file get hammered, 2 gigs is the bare minimum to use applications on vista and will certainly be swapping.

buy 4 gigs of ram and turn off pagefile???

1) are you sure vista will allow that. apparently it will still create AND manage AND utilise a pagefile against your wish if you disable all pagefiles. am i correct? that way it's even worse coz you have no control over the fragmentation

2) i have 4 gigs of ram. never use more than 1.5gig >99% of the time as i shut it down every day. if i run the OS longer than 24 hours it may touch 3gig ram used. but the pagefile sure as gets hammered all the time. even immediately post loading when only 800mb ram's used. go figure!

these are why i dislike vista. any better alternatives though? nope :)
