Well I'm now ARMed with a couple of these gorgeous babies c/o a recent Red Hat APAC tech event where we all got some to hack around with one evening. The Fedora 17 remix works quite well along with raspbian, but I'm struggling to work out what is wrong with raspbmc.

When I first boot the GUI becomes completely unresponsive and I either get dropped to a command line or the unit locks up.

Any tips on how long after boot I should wait before trying to use the GUI?

Mine works immediately, never had a lockup or it going unresponsive, but I haven't used it all that much yet - waiting for a case. When I ssh in and run top the processor usage is pretty high even when it's idle though, 20-60%.

I have it talking to MySQL for library stuff, and the file server's my PC.

Maybe try a different SD card? My Pi goes straight into the GUI on startup.

What are you using as a power supply? I heard low quality or low capacity power supplies, or running it off a TV/computer USB port can cause things like this.

For those that might be interested, Raspbmc streams SD content from a Vu+Duo fine, but struggles with 1080i HD content even on a wired network.

Setting up a TuxBox connection allows Raspbmc to access the TV channel favourites, and you can select and stream from there. The only bugger is that you get an alphabetical list based on the embedded transmitted channel name (ie. you can't change it to sort the list), but that's a small issue in the scheme of things.

Haven't got the pass-though TV remote control stuff working yet, but that's possibly a TV issue.

Mine works great on RaspBMC after replacing the SD card, the first card I used was constantly freezing. Now it boots up very quickly. Try a good SD card as the other guys mentioned.

My experiences is that I have been able to stream 1080p content over a powerline network connection with the content coming off a USB drive attached to my file server. This is with DTS audio. But there is a bit of delay for buffering before the content starts to play.

I am not using RaspBMC but DarkElec2.

Ok the issue was the power supply. I've two identical looking supplied with different power ratings. Switched to a 1A unit and raspbmc is stable now.

Interesting - is the HD content compressed at all?  I found that some live TV content would almost work, but the likes of sports were hopeless.  It's not the Vu+Duo, as it streams HD happily to a PC.

Compressed BluRay so about 5GB for a 2 hour movie with DTS audio.

I have also been able to play the .ts files recorded from Freeview (TV3) with no problems. This is over 100Mbs

ny brother just got a pi and bought a class 10 sd card from jbhifi, the pi was really slow, i tried apacer 8gb class 10 sd card from pbtech and wow what a difference.

so yeah make sure you get a good sd card, not just a class 10 one, a recommended brand/model one i would suggest. if youre close to a pbtech a class 10 apacer 8gb card can be bought for less than $12

Sorry - haven't read the whole thread, but can someone tell me the preferred place to buy Raspberry Pi these days, and how long do that take to get to NZ? Also be interested to here whether you got a PSU and case from the same supplier.

I develop some PVR software called NextPVR which runs on Windows, and recently built and released a PVR addon for XBMC. I've only seen it working Windows, but others have started using it with their Raspberry Pi devices in RaspBMC RC5 or OpenELEC, and I'm keen to take a look at how it runs.

Hi Sub

Most of not all of us are getting from Element14 since they build the Pi in this area of the world.

As for PSU, most of us are using USB ports on our PC's or TV's or USB hubs. You can also cannibalise a phone charger with right USB adapter on it.

I ordered a case initially but it was backordered and coming from the UK. In the end I just build a case from a used cassette tape box using a Dremel tool!
