NZtechfreak:
timmmay: I've used a couple of amps, including a headroom balanced amp and a custom built PPA with nice parts. I couldn't tell any difference between them with either HD650s or my LCD2. I can only hear much difference between the output of an iPod and the output of an amp with really hard to drive headphones. My A900s sound the same from a $1000 amp as from my computer. Back in the olden days computer audio was rubbish - these days I think it's fine for 99% of people.

I suspect amps are like those special $1000 monster HDMI cables. Some color the music slightly but overall they're toys for rich people.

You will change your tune immediately if you listen to my HE-6 out of an iPod and then a powerful dedicated amp.

Like I said some headphones need an amp - those once are considered EXTREMELY difficult to drive so need an amp. I'd like to have a listen - if you ever happen to have the setup in Wellington or if I come to Auckland - which I do every 5-10 years ;)

Even my wife who isn't a music buff can tell the difference between my DAC+ crack amp and T1's over just dac+t1

My wife can't tell (or doesn't care about) the difference between watching TV through the TV speakers vs via an amp and a reasonably decent 5.1 system :(

NZtechfreak: The T1's are great, awesome genre bandwidth, great sound, comfortable, not too amp picky. I'd sit on those too were I you!

So with your desktop sorted, next comes the portable rig!

I rate these highly for a portable in ear solution. https://www.blackboxonline.com/nz/products/c20/ These go in my travel bag and the HP 50's stay at home. smile

I'm sure they are nice, I just don't get on with IEMs. At all.

This ^^^

It drives me insane!

But she'll sit there and listen to Breaking Bad through the iPad speaker quite happily.

I gave her my Beats but she is happy with the mono iPad speaker!

CanJam SoCal 2015: The Biggest Headphone Audio Event In North America!

It's official: CanJam SoCal 2015 is the biggest dedicated headphone audio event ever to hit North America! Attendees and exhibitors are coming from all over the world for what's going to be an amazing headphone audio party, so don't miss it!

Man I'd love to attend this, pity if I went I'd be both broke and a broken man (Since if I spent all our money on this my wife would not be very impressed :))

Carrying a set of over the ear headphones isn't a practical option for me.There's no doubt about it, "Over the Ears" are better.  However so far as "In the Ear" units go the Blackbox C20 are very hard to beat. Very comfortable to wear, good attenuation of background drum and hum.

Slightly off-topic but I saw that last year there was an Auckland Headphone Meet.  Are there any plans to have one this year?  I'd love to get a chance to look at a few different headphones and HPAs.

More on-topic the Audeze EL-8s are looking very interesting.  I look forward to hearing how they compare to other closed back designs.

Apart from a CIEM there is no such thing as a comfortable IEM for me I'm afraid. If I could use them I certainly would.

Yes, there will be another meet this year (I was the organiser last year, and plan to arrange this year's also). If you keep an eye peeled here you'll see more on the meet once the time is nailed down. It'll be a bit later in the year this time around.

Regards the site there, I mostly made it for the meet, but I'll soon have some more regular content going up with gear reviews and such like.
