Hi can i ask you folks, what headphones (closed and open) under $500US has the same sound signature as an LCD2 - bass midrange treble. Don't care about soundstage.

I'm guessing there isn't ... ?

So I have some Polk Ultrafocus 8000 headphones.

I love them, they sound great, have very good noise cancelling effect and are very efficient on battery life, where they constantly our perform the manufacturers estimates for time.

However there are some limitations that I want to look into so my next set of headphones.

1, The Ultrafocus are heavy and over 4 hours do get tiresome to wear.

2, The noise isolation is not good! I use them in the office constantly and when I need to concentrate I crank them up, my neighbors in the office love this as they get a very good reproduction of my music even though they are not actually wearing the headphone.

So what set, and they don't need to be noise cancelling as they will be for office use only has similar sound reproduction, light and preferably over ear rather than on ear and very good noise isolation?

I will be using for music only and listen to all sorts but mostly Fleetwood mac, Bowie, Elton John etc. source is my Iphone6S+ if it matters and I have a Fiio E11 if needed (don't need with the Polk's.

Really only wanting to spend $200 but can stretch for the right set.

Well i have just acquired what i think atleast for me are high end headphones.I bought some sennheiser PXC 450 http://en-us.sennheiser.com/noise-canceling-headphones-travel-pxc-450

Also! Whilst on the subject of Shure's I was thinking of getting a pair of SRH1840's to replace/upgrade my Grado 325i's.

Love the detail on the Grado's but starting to find them a little fatiguing and harsh on some recordings and still not all that comfortable for long periods.

I have had Shure's before and usually love their sound - should I trust the SRH1840's un-listened and get some ordered?

I have the 1840 and no complaints there. They are open back though so not really ideal in the office

I got the Shure IEMs and the Bose noise cancelling for the office - these would be at home cans only!

For that money you should get the HE560. Better headphone and the signature will suit you if you're you're looking for something on the brighter side of neutral without the harshness of the Grado. Addicted to Audio has an open box pair for around the cost of the Shures. Seriously, much better headphone.

The SH1840 was one of the first headphones I'd tried when I decided to jump down the Rabbit hole. The reviews I read made it sound amazing. When I tried them I was massively dissapointed.

I liked my HE400 a lot, but between the Sen HD650 and HE400 there was just no competition so I kept the Sens. I imagine the 560 would be quite nice. I keep intending to try them, but never get around to it.

My next set of cans will probably be HD800's if I can find some at a price I can live with.

Right now my HD650's and the T1's are enough, I actually almost never use the HD650's because I really love the T1's.

The HE560 are pretty close to the HD800 in terms of performance, only with better bass. For the asking price they're probably the biggest value proposition in the higher end. I'd rate then ahead of the T1, although I've not heard the new improved T1 V2.

Thanks for the input. Was looking to get these in UK anyways, so would be paying around NZ$800 rather than the $1200 they seem to be here!

Had thought about listening to some Planar cans - was musing over the Oppo PM3s as well.

Not sure if my Centrance DacPort has the grunt to drive them?

Hm - disappointing to hear! What in particular did you find lacking in them?

Weirdly I have a total mental block on even trying Sennheisers - I bought a pair some 15+ years ago (can't remember which ones) and they sounded awful and broke within months - have never gone back since!

The DACport wouldn't be ideal for the 560, but would easily do the PM-3. The PM-3, in its price bracket, is also a great performer. NZ price just gone up on the PM-3, most audio gear prices moving up due to exchange rate.
