Been thinking about those Sony in ears, the ones with their best noise cancelling, but then wondering if you could actually use them with the screen on a plane or not?

You need an extra bit of kit to act as a Bluetooth transmitter. $10-$15 on AliExpress.

Those Ali Express transmitters work. Be careful of the ones with NFC, some have a blue blinking light that won't stop. They need USB power of course.

You could always carry a bluetooth transmitter and plug it in the normal heaphone jack - the ones i've seen are quite small, and last a good day on battery

Most of them are battery powered. Getting one with aptx is vital otherwise the latency suuuuucks.

On that note I’ve actually been using my Sony XM3’s for gaming quite a bit now. Mainly due to a combination of my new ryzen rig ramping up cpu fans as well as external noise, the noise cancelling of the xm3’s is quite advantageous in multiplayer gaming.

The HD6xx are comfortable and nice to use but the noise pollution during the day is affecting their use in weekend gaming :(

I had DT770-80s a while back. I found the bass way too strong (and I liked lots of bass at the time), mids weak, and poor clarity. Audio Technica make great closed headphones, I have the A900. I don't like the headband on the latest version much though - at least last time I checked. Think it may have been the X series, maybe the Z series is better.

My first ever headphones were ath-ad900x’s which I still use on occasion. You’re right about the headband on those, they were a pain without some elastic to support the middle ‘wings’. Pleather also puts me off as every headset with it has had it disintegrate after a year or so of daily use. Also why I don’t want to use the XM3’s heavily for gaming. Fabric and easy to wash is my go-to

The original A900 has the wing design, and it worked really well. They messed it up for the X series.

I just tried the 3D sound thing on the Sony app that works with the 1000m3 headphones.

It actually photographs your ears and somehow adjusts the sound field to work better. The only app I have that it works with is Tidal.

I’m not usually a massive fan of these various pseudo sound systems. This one is actually surprisingly good - as well as hugely geeky! Photos of ears turned into optimised sound fields. That’s just sorcery.

Those are nice looking headphones @item

They really do sound splendid as well. They were at the upper-mid range of the Sonorous line at the time they released and seemed to be the ones that everyone liked the best - even over the stupid expensive Xs.

Biggest issue was comfort with the original pads, but since release a few different iterations were made available and the ones I have now are very comfortable.

It was a struggle to think about selling them - I love them still - but they just never get used and it is such a shame, so I thought better to sell them on and have them do what they were designed to do!

I watched some reviews, and the common complaint seems to be the "interesting" design of the headband itself, with them mentioning them not being stable, slipping and rolling forward and back once they are on your head.

Did you experience that? Apparently, they sound great, which does matter, but as per my posts above re my HD800S's the comfort and fit are quite big factors for me.

Never had an issue with that at all! I did read that in the initial release (they were originally called the "Pandora" but got changed to Sonorous for some reason) that the tension/friction of the cup mountings to the band was not quite locked in and it could slide but I have had no issues with fit and head stability.

The ball joints work really well at maintaining the hold and position for me and the clamping force is just right. They are a touch heavier than the HD800S and not as comfortable (but the Senns are probably among the most comfortable cans I have come across!) and make my ears a little warm after a long session but they feel great IMHO.

The big issue I *did* have with comfort was with the original pads - they were too shallow and small and the drivers actually pushed on my ears which got pretty uncomfortable, but with the "Type C" pads solved all these issues without compromising the sound.

Doesn't look Sennheiser make replacement pads for my Momentums (on ear). Has anyone had any luck with third party ones? The headphones are now pretty cheap to replace, but it seems a waste for just the pad coming off.

I bought some from Amazon. I have done this twice. Once it was good, and the other the plastic was quite flimsy on the pad itself and when i was twisting it on, it broke. I couldn't be bothered ordering more or making a fuss over what I think was $20 usd.

I currently have a pair of Sony MDR-10RBT wireless Bluetooth headphones that I've had for a good 5 or more years. The ear pads have started to shed, and now the left side frame is cracked.

These headphones are predominantly paired with my Sony NWZ-A15 player or phone (Huawei P9).

These devices are mainly used during my daily commute to and from work on the bus and used for either music or watching YouTube. I may be able to do running repairs on the cracked frame, but a replacement will have to be looked at.

Ideally, I'd like to keep costs under $250 ish, and have a pair that don't leak sound to surrounding commuters.

In the Sony range, what are the successors to the MDR-10RBT's?

I've had Sennheiser wired headphones before and they've been ok, so would look at the brand again.

I've had Sennheiser wired headphones before and they've been ok, so would look at the brand again.

For use on a bus (or plane/train) I'd really recommend noise-cancelling. You could probably get some Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTC under budget, they're fine. I haven't tried the cheaper Sony range - only their wh-1000xm3 (have a pair here), but they're approx double your budget. The most stark difference with those is that the noise cancelling performance is stunning - better than anything else I've used. OTOH the NC performance of the Sennheisers and Bose QC 35 I tried on a plane - they're all perfectly adequate. Noise cancelling probably helps save your ears too - you don't have to turn them up as loud to hear over background noise. AFAICT, as they're closed back, there's not much noise leakage.

Downsides with the Sennheisers, they use micro USB rather than USB-C for charging and you can't use them when they're charging - OTOH the battery life is excellent. The controls on the side are a bit fiddly - particularly the slider to go skip tracks back/forward, and I understand from a review that the controls for turning NC on and off aren't the same when you're running them corded - but the review also made quite a few mistakes - so either they didn't RTFM, or missed something (you hold the centre of the volume rocker down for about a second to toggle NC on and off - there's no voice saying "NC on or off" but it's immediately apparent). They feel a bit more cheaply made - probably at least partly because they are - but mine have lasted a couple of years regular use with no problems.
