I have a Sony Bravia TV and Sony blu-ray player, along with an older Yamaha home theatre amp. The amp only has optical and coax inputs for digital sound but the TV has a neat feature that converts HDMI audio in to optical audio out so I can hear Dolby surround sound from the player. This works exactly as it should with any DVD, but every blu-ray disk I try only outputs PCM stereo. Same player, same everything else, but I can only get 5.1 audio from DVDs and not blu-rays. I have gone through all the manuals and settings but I can’t find anything that explains this. Does anyone know more?

Ok, thanks for the reply. At least I know now what is happening. I solved the problem by running a direct coax link from the player to the amp but I'm still glad to know why this was happening. Many thanks.
