heavenlywild: There has been reports of backlight bleed on many SP4s. Can anyone with a SP4 comment on this?

Apparently Microsoft are aware of this issue and has rectified it in their newer stocks.

http://forums.windowscentral.com/microsoft-surface-pro-4/401864-surface-pro-4-backlight-bleed-microsoft-aware-apparently-fixed-issue.html

Yes I've got some on the bottom edge of mine.

Edit two: I just fired it up in normal light conditions and you can't see a thing, even on the boot screen and not on an entirely black image full screen either. But I do remember distictly seeing it in a fully dark room while testing for dead pixels with a black screen; probably for the test I would have had the brightness on full. Since then I've watched a bit of video in bed and didn't notice anything.

So mine at least isn't noticeable unless you go looking for it.

Mine also has light bleed at the very bottom of the panel. However as others have said its only visible on the boot screen as at the moment brightness is at 100%. If this wasn't the case I doubt people would notice during daily use.

On boot there is some bleeding around the edges, mostly around the camera for some reason but I just tried a black full screen image and there was no noticeable bleeding.

Thanks, good to know. What about when playing a video?

When did you get your device?

Video is fine, like others have said its really only there at boot. I bought mine at new years.

my surface pro 4 8gb 256GB  has a disgraceful amount of screen bleed, more than ive seen on any other laptop or tablet in the last 10 years,

everytime i turn it on i cringe looking at it, as its most noticeable on dark backgrounds as everyone says

i change the wallpapers and taskbar to a lighter colour so its less noticeable - in the dark watching a movie is a disgrace, specially if it has black bars on top bottom.

I saw another surface pro 4 from a customer, also had screen bleed, but in a different spot than mine,

will probably be my last surface.

^I think you should definitely get it replaced. It's a premium product afterall.

What's stopping you?

id consider the surface to be of a premium price, but not a premium product itself, its let down with build quality issues such as a screen bleed, and even worse the drivers/firmware, although
it sure it alot better now than when i got it on launch day.

the screen bleed problems are widely known,  if i was 100% sure i would get back a better device than i have now, i would definitely go through the process, i just think id get a 2nd hand
unit back with similar bleed issues at this point.

According to Microsoft from the link I have provided, they have rectified the issue now. So if you to get a replacement, make sure you get the new batch. No idea how you would figure it out though.

Mine too. I only really see it when the loading screen shows at the beginning of the boot sequence.

Im taking mine back to get replaced. It has started to emit a high pitch squeal constantly and is not the nicest. Looking around its seems quite common.

Similar to this http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpro-surfusingpro/high-pitched-very-disturbing-noise-off-my-surface/c8b85adb-2316-4d8d-871d-4100f3022bc3?db=5&auth=1

Any update on your replacement? I did you try any of the tweaks from the link above?

A question about custom resolutions on the SP4. Has anyone tried to add additional 3:2 resolutions? And why would it "potentially damage your hardware" if you did have new resolutions added to the machine?

The new one has it but not as bad as the old one. Yeah I tried the tweaks but the sound is there from boot so I don't think tweaking stuff in windows will fix it.

I haven't heard anything about the resolutions. It can be hard to get a game to fit to the monitor.

Hi Decal,

Thanks for your reply. How was the experience returning the SP4? Was it to Microsoft? I am weighing up between buying from a brick and mortar vs Microsoft.

I bought mine from Harvey Norman. Before I went to the store I spoke to Microsoft support and troubleshooted with them and they gave me a reference number. I took the reference number to Harveys and they looked at the device and said they would replace it. I think it helped that it was within 2 weeks of the purchase. I don't know if I should keep going back untill I get one that doesn't have the noise and light bleed

Good stuff, that is an idea to call Microsoft first. I don't think HN would have been that easy to deal with without one!

So, the light bleed is also on your replacement machine? That is a real bummer man. i5/256/8gb version?

I reckon that because you have paid top dollar, you should get one that is perfect.

Is it easy to connect your SP4 to an external monitor without issue?

Yeah but I have read stires on reddit of people who have been through 3-4 and still have the same issue...

I don't have a monitor that connects via mDP haha so can't comment sorry.
