Stu: I'm waiting on Microsoft to receive stock of the i7/16GB/256GB model. The i7 models seem to have been unavailable for a while. Maybe due to the backlight bleed issue?

I contemplated a Macbook, but when those normally supporting and using Apple also lean towards the Surface Pro it just didn't seem to be the right way to go. ;-)

There was a thread on reddit about i7 SP4s being held until a certain update was applied to all i7 models.

Thanks for the link. Actually the more you search for problems, the more you realise there are far too many for a device in this price bracket!

this isn't really a great way to measure anything.

there is no massive conspiracy of a "silent recall" or i7 units as mentioned in that thread

the i7 Skylake Core i7-6650U parts are just in short supply in the supplychain

that's all....

Stu: Still putting together a package for consideration. Does anyone know how to get the "Microsoft Complete Accident Protection for Surface Pro" if you buy from a retailer? I can add it as an item in the Microsoft online store after adding the Surface Pro, but otherwise it's apparently not available. Retailers don't seem to be aware of it either. Seems if there's a Microsoft shop near you, you just take the tablet in for them to verify and you can buy the warranty. Online or otherwise doesn't seem to be an option. @nathan?

Noel Leeming offering the free typecover seems to be the best deal at the moment.

All commercial devices purchased from a business reseller come with advanced exchange/forward replacement built in

Only retail devices purchased from the Microsoft Store can have the Complete warranty attached.

Many retailers sell their own extended warranties

Commercial devices can have the Microsoft Complete for Business or Microsoft Complete for Enterprise warranties attached

When you look at what the problems are, and how many people are having the problems? There shouldn't be that many affected customers, surely? Also seem to be issues with the dock.

Microsoft are also acknowledging and apologising for the issues, which they surely wouldn't do if it wasn't a major problem.

I have seen rumours of processor shortages, but hadn't been able to find a confirmation of this being the reason for the unavailability of the i7 models. A couple of sites mention Microsoft sales cite software issues/updates as reasons for the stock issues, which makes little sense.

If I do decide to continue down this path and gamble almost $4000 on an SP4 and extras, I'll buy direct from Microsoft.

there are a small sub-segment of Surface Pro 4/Surface Book customers having issues with the new Intel Skylake SOC including sleep/video and docking.

we are aware of the problem, and they will be fixed shortly in an upcoming Surface firmware update delivered by Windows Update.

Its not a gamble, if you have a problem with the goods not being fit for purpose etc they can easily be returned.

Might be luckier you had to wait. Maybe you'll have less light bleed. There is a post or two saying they're supposed to be fixing it. Who knows? You'll have to tell us how yours is.

Edit: Nathan do you know if it's true that MS is fixing the backlight bleed problem? I was surprised how many places at the bottom especially but some at the top in landscape mode on mine had it even though on my last one it wasn't noticeable in average working conditions.

Anyone know if Microsoft going to be bringing the Surface 4 (non-Pro) units into NZ with the 3G/LTE module? If not, why not?

Surface 3 with LTE has only launched in a few countries, we proritise where based on market opportunity, costs for getting the LTE certified by local telco's etc

We've decided to not launch it in NZ.

They're available in AU, you could parallel import one, I'm sure PB Tech would get one in for you etc

Personally I'd encourage you to look at the 3rd party Windows OEM options

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 10

HP ElitePad 1000G2

 HP Pro x2 612

HP Elite x2 1011

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix

Toshiba Z20t

Do you think we could ever get a physical Microsoft Store here in NZ Nathan? Would be great to have although I'm sure our market is too small. Also I love how Microsoft stores overseas have a range of other branded laptops like Dell, Vaio and sell the stripped down "signature edition" of the laptops.

Even Apple doesn't have a store in country :)

We just opened the Sydney store so that's the closest to NZ right now
