I think it will be the new 10.5 iPad Pro paired with the Brydge keyboard. Makes it seem like a Mac version of a Chromebook.

The images I will have to deal with another way - perhaps with a, SD reader enabled wifi hard drive or something.

The 10.5 iPad version of the Brydge seems a bit rare in NZ just now but I am sure I can find it somewhere.

I’d be interested in hearing about your experiences with this combo. I’m an old school person who has grown accustomed to a keyboard and mouse, and I’ve never really gotten comfortable with the Tap only ipads

I think that it would, but it's not uncommon for me to shoot say 3000 images in 4 weeks travelling, all as RAW. My workflow usually is card to computer to disk drive A and disk drive B so that there are 3 copies of every image in different places until I get home.

The iPad is unlikely to facilitate that sort of work flow and I may have to get a cheap used MacBook Air or something for those trips unless the wireless hard drive idea works.

Apple seem to believe that every single one of their customers lives in Cupertino on 1000 Mbs fibre connections. When I was in India recently, much of the time I could not even get a fast enough wifi connection to download email, much less push all my images to the Cloud, something that I cannot even do at home in NZ to be honest.

However, iOS 11 does seem to be moving towards a more useful product. Apparently it has some sort of File Explorer/Finder system, albeit nascent but version 11 certainly looks a lot more useful as an OS on a "laplet" (or is it "tabtop"?!) than 9 or 10 did - they just looked like a big iPhone.

I agree with you. Some would doubtless find it quaintly antediluvian to want to attach a full size keyboard to a tablet (and carry a wireless mouse!) but meh, who cares what these young people think?!

So I'll add my 2c.

I bought the Samsung Chromebook Pro as an upgrade from my Toshiba Chromebook 2. As Amazon ship this direct to NZ it is also covered by their (excellent) warranty support.

Pros:
Bloody beautiful screen.
SPEN.
Reads RAW images.
MicroSD Card.
Converts into a tablet.
Amazing battery life (getting 9+ hours out of mine).
Really good build quality.
Can run Android apps.

Cons:
Power adaptor has US plug and is an all in one unit - nothing a travel adaptor can't fix though (what I use) but because it is USB-C you could always replace it.
Some Android apps are not optimised for the insane resolution of the screen.
Speakers are a little quiet however I've actually noticed a huge difference to this in a recent ChromeOS update.

I would strongly recommend it - it is a great laptop and Chromebooks are awesome for everyday tasks away from your computer. Also, it is light and easy to cart around and totally fanless. If you've got questions about it feel free to ping me as I've had my unit for about 3 months now.

Or do you mean transfer from/to external devices?

Transferring off via anything other than wifi is still difficult. Not even sure you can copy onto an SD card that you can import from.

Yes that is a downside I will agree.

I suppose they know that if they make that sort of thing too easy, hardly anyone will buy a laptop from them anymore..!

Files app does not transfer any files. At least not that that i know how to. Files, It's meant to be a cloud collaborating folder. Not to transfer files.

Define transfer? It's probably not designed for large scale file transfers of images or automatic transfer.

But I just copied a single file from box to icloud drive, and local storage....and if i was at home could have transferred it to a webdav/windows share.

I'm not sure what functionality you're trying to decribe.
