Not keen on spending $150 on a pen for my Surface Pro.
Any ideas for a reasonably priced ($50 - $70) substitute product?

Any old stylus will work but the Surface Pen is well worth the money.  You'd be mad to not get the proper pen for the device you have.  

 

It's only $130 at Noel Leeming.  I think I got mine from NL last year for around $90 on sale.
