Peter Griffin from the Herald got a preview of EV-DO revision A in San Diego recently, but doesn't seem to be impressed with the speed of the upgrade:

The speeds achieved ranged from 370Kbps to 500Kbps - only slightly better than speeds obtained from the previous generation of data cards.

He tested on Sprint's network in the US - be interesting to see how Rev A performs in New Zealand.

Something strange there... I can get between 600Kbps through 1Mbps with CDMA EVDO Rev 0 here in New Zealand.

I've hit over 1Mbit/s in good signal conditions, and normally get 5-600kbit/s. Shame Peter didn't check out the latency.

Note that Rev A only uplifts download to 3.1mbps from 2.4mbps it's the upload thats consdierably better up from 156kbps to 1.8mbps!!!

All depends on the back haul ie or what eva it is.

Got to remember the huge benefits that EVDO has here in coverage, most likely even when Voda introduces 900mhz WCDMA

I have seen many new 3G WCDMA/HSDPA sites been built that have not been turned on to air yet!! they must be close

and HSUPA is meant to be here early next year from what the media say and the uplink first stage is 1.8 mbps

I was using a Vodem in the bottom of Auckland city about 2 weeks back and this was a constant 2.4 mbps (not peak)

But I am sure TCNZ have many new Rev 0 sites planned as well

Yeah i bet they are there, it will be good once Both TNZ & Voda have decent 3g networks. Note the new multinetwork 3g cards coming out next year might be able to take adavantage of the coverage from both providers, hopefully telecom wont lock these cards to o2 or TNZ sims only.
