I'm about to move off the UFB trial Bigpipe was running for Aucklander's and have made the commitment to drop my old copper provider and move to Bigpipe.

The family would still like to keep their local landline number so have looked into running voip with 2talk. I would just like some questions answered about what I will need to do to make this work seamlessly.

Do I need to have the add on Static IP from Bigpipe to have incoming and outgoing calls work correctly with 2talk?

I have made a free account with 2talk and have requested a port of my old VF number to occur on the 28th, I will be running a SPA112 ATA. I will probably upgrade to the talk 10 plan, should I do this before or after the port happens?

I realise this may be more intended for the VOIP forums so if admins need to move this then do so.

Not having experience with this kind of thing any help is appreciated.

When I tried it last when I had to take calls from some cheap relatives, it worked fine on an ATA behind the router without the public IP address, but the ATA integrated into the router was just no audio, one way audio, not getting calls constantly till I got the public IP address on the connection. I was using an 8 port linksys ATA that 2talk only manage to configure the first 2 lines on, but it should be the same on all of them.

Theres no cost for the public IP address so IMO get one anyway just to rule it out from any problems.

I asked Bigpipe about a Public IP address and they responded they did not issue them anymore, that I had to request a Static IP from them.

I asked for a Public IP and was told the same thing. One of the BigPipe contributors to Geekzone got it sorted for me but I see in the FAQ they have on their website that they don't offer Public IPs; this is a new addition to their FAQ so I'm not sure how much luck you'll have getting one.

I'm in a similar situation as you. The landline is with 2talk but we've moved house recently and I haven't tried setting it up yet as we hardly use it and I've got it set up so that any calls to the landline are forwarded to my wife's mobile.

I don't think it would matter too much when you upgrade your plan, maybe do it after the number is ported just in case there are any issues and you're not paying for a service you can't use?

Yea I see that now :( I had read threads here and on GP forums where 'BigPipeNZ' handle had mentioned that a Public IP was free guess they have changed that.

"Public IP is free, you just need to request one, and whilst we may choose to charge for it in the future, I don't think it is very likely based on the volumes of people requesting it so far.- @BigpipeNZ"

Static ip is only a $45 one off charge, which is still miles better than most other providers who charge $5-20 per MONTH for their static ip, so just go with that.

You've had free ufb for 3 months. What do you mean by 'looking after you'?

Sorry, have I offended you personally in some way? I don't need a static ip however I may need a public ip and another user mentioned that someone here had helped in the past.

I use 2Talk with BigPipe on ADSL and there was no need for a public or static IP. I use a SPA122 that registers with 2Talk and that seems to be all that's needed.

When a public and static IP is useful is for many VPN options who authenticate by IP, but for some of those some automation on your side can update them every time your IP changes.
