Just got my fibre installed today after quite a lengthy process (I live in an apartment building with 100+ units, so had to go through the MDU consent process). I signed up on December 17 (originally with Orcon, then realised I would prefer the greater speed that BigPipe can offer) so that's about 3-4 months. Still, not the worst wait I've heard of, I guess. And obviously completely out of the ISPs' control.

Anyhoo, it's all up and running now and I am loving it. Here's my first speed test result via Ethernet (surprisingly my iPhone 6 on Wifi was a bit faster, and had only 3ms ping):

Looking forward to seeing how much my Dropbox upload speeds have improved. I was on ADSL at about 10 Mb/s down and 1-2 up.

What router did you go with?

FYI - 3-4 months is probably slightly below average for an MDU, so you've done pretty well to get it in that time. :P

FYI - 3-4 months is probably slightly below average for an MDU, so you've done pretty well to get it in that time. :P

I went with the Netgear R7000. Happy with it so far (if I can say that after only two hours..).

And yeah, I was prepared to wait 6 months or so, luckily I have a good relationship with our building manager, body corp chairperson and the body corp company, so getting them to sign the consents was super easy. Would've been even faster if we didn't have the "dead month" of Christmas & New Year.

I've got clients in the CBD hanging out for fibre but the (very large) commercial building is up for sale and the current owners are not interested. A sale could be months away...

What apartment building are you in out of interest? Would be nice to know which ones are "UFB-friendly" :D

The Landing at the bottom of Parenll Rise are NOT - UFB friendly!!!

The little things make the biggest difference.

Granted I have very little knowledge of costs associated with getting UFB into a large block of flats or who covers it during UFB rollout, but it still amazes me that owners\landlords\body corps\whatever don't seem to understand the advantages of getting it, and what a big selling point it could be...

I just dont think the whole process was ever thought assessed and planned...

Tremont, in St Lukes. Lived here for two years and love it.

MitchellC: Are you using custom firmware on the R7000 or stock? I am with BigPipe and had to load Tomato to get support for VLAN Tagging, but have since heard that they no longer require it.

Just stock firmware. I was told by BigPipe to disable VLAN Tagging.

Chorus/Govt covers it to the tune of $1000 per tenancy. That means a block of 50 units has $50,000 to play with..

yep, that's correct. Your connection would still have it enabled, but all new ones don't. (unless customer requests it)

FWIW the latest firmware from Netgear for the R7000 supports VLAN tagging.

How did you go about getting it from them? Also, would everyone have to go through the MDU consent process or would that no longer be necessary now?

Send a message on the Bigpipe support page. If you're in the same building as OP then the consents should be fine and you should be able to get it installed in 2 weeks.
