Can anyone tell me what does Telecom New Zealand do in London? They seem to have an office in the New Zealand House, which is in London.

Have to say that I'm loving the telco market here.... iphones for a cheap £169; free handsets; unlimited date.... SWEET!!

Unlimited data in the UK?

AFAIK Vodafone, T-Mobile and O2 apply fair use rules... And Oange says 30 MB is "unlimited".

Yip you are quite right, fair use policy does apply. My O2 contract states that it is 200MB; I currently own a P1i and have all of my gmail pushed into my phone, browse the web significantly - and yet only use under 100MB

Although whilst I was working at Telecom; everything was paid for (Data + Voice)..... all of our work phone bills kinda goes to a big black hole that no one pays for....

I have a 200 MB plan and really use about 100 MB a month with push e-mail and some browsing. I don't use my Pocket PC as a modem - I have data cards for this...

I agree 200 MB is ok for most people. But the operators calling "unlimited" something limited to 200 MB - sometimes limited to 30 MB, is just something that in good old New Zealand wouldn't go very far...

Anyway, back to TNZI. The page I linked has a good description of their activities in London.

I get annoyed that you can't really buy too many good phones unless you're on a contract. What's with that? I am happy to pay ?x pounds for a phone, but many operators just flat out refuse to sell me one, instead forcing me onto their contracts to get it. I assume there's more money in it for them then, but it's annoying.
Most people I've spoken to about this don't actually understand what I'm talking about, so ingrained is it in people that you can't just buy a phone you have to tie it to a provider as well. I prefer to keep the two separate. I have my phone and change providers as I please (which so far I haven't, but it's nice to have the choice)<

I don't think things are that great here though, certainly not a real lot cheaper in terms of income than NZ is/was. Though "unlimited" data is nice.

The pound sign doesn't work? Do I need to be using the WYSIWYG editor?

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

I don't think the Brits are used to paying for a phone as phones have somewhat become a free commodity

I am about to buy a Gen 1 iphone to replace my P1i and hack it before Gen 2 comes out. £169 cant go wrong!

Having seen a unlocked iTouch and all it's apps, I can see why. Though I couldn't buy a phone now that didn't have at least UMTS, preferably HSDPA. I was going to buy a P1i, but lack of HSDPA stopped me. Though if you wanted to sell yours...

That's another thing I find funny here actually, almost all the individuals in phone stores I go into know nothing about data. It's very rarely mentioned in pricing plans either. They are trying hard to separate it off to individual USB Modem plans.

I am actually loving my P1i however will need to send it in for repairs as the side back button requires significant force to register.

So if I get it back; it might be a worthy-purchase as a refurb model

In all honest I turned off my UMTS mode as it chews up a lot of power and for what I use it for (Google maps ; Push email; Opera Mini browsing; facebook/wikipedia browsing) - it works great just with GPRS

PM me if you are keen and I'll take this in for repairs soon

Off topic:

Posting from a Tianjin DSL connection now, despite the ausi flag, I AM in china! Yes, I was posting from my blackberry roaming in China - there are two options, routing through the blackberry internet service (hence the canada IP) or through the blackberry enterprise service (which would appear as my workplaces IP, a lot of interesting stuff could be said about how BES works but I'll refrain from posting it :P).

On Topic (my previous response that I removed because of a really offtopic comment):

Most people going overseas to GSM only countries will be using worldmode devices, GSM loan phones (supplied free of charge), or Telecom SIM cards with their own GSM handsets.

Of course, people who are based there on a long term basis probably find it more cost effective to use local connections (would you like calling New Zealand just to call someone in a different building to you in London?)....
